To be fair he's coached some really mediocre teams on the back half of his career and even those Rangers teams weren't that great. Getting the Jackets into the playoffs for four straight seasons is an accomplishment no other head coach had made. He got a lot of flack about the way he handled Ryan Johansen but he was bang on about the guy. Put your hands up if you thought the Flyers would hold a playoff spot this season. He's got a shelf life but he's a really good head coach.

Mangiapane isn't even the best player on the third line and he's paid like a 2nd line player. If these criticisms exist for a guy like Huberdeau who's spent most of his time in Calgary playing with people that can't shoot they'll exist for Mangiapane. I'd say he's gotten more of a benefit playing with Coleman and Backlund then they have from playing with him.

I have no problem with Mangiapane on the 3rd line but he got a contract to score goals which he isn't doing, and he might not even get 15 this year.

Crazy how goalies like Bob, Lundqvist, and Khabibulin do for your record.

Torts expiry hitting in Philly.
His antics are so time sensitive and he can't adapt to anything. Philly is barely in a playoff spot & he's gonna lose the room.

Doesn't explain his mediocre record in TB outside the cup one-off. The big difference - no Khabibhulin.

I think he's relatively competent. But also I think he's overrated.

Yeah, this has deflection written all over it. If the Flyers fall out of the playoffs, Torts probably gets canned. I actually think the Flyers are doing well enough this season for the team they have, but guys like him have a shelf life.

Kipper and Quick did a lot for another guy's record as well.

Also seems to have some real anger management issues.

Not sure why the NHL continues to recycle coaches like this.
You mean why NHL teams continue to employ him? The NHL in general doesn’t have much of a say

Neutering your captain publicly seems to be a curious way to try to motivate your team, but that seems to be his style.

He is one of the best coaches of all time. Him and Sutter are beauties and get the most from their teams.

Better than some vanilla coaches who want to be friends with their players.

Another underrated hard coach who people assume is a friendly coach is John Cooper.

Not a chance. He was brought in deliberately by management and ownership to change the culture of the team in what they assumed would be a non-playoff season. The fact he has them battling for a playoff spot vindicates their decision.

In the handful of games I've seen him play this season he looked good. Possession stats seem to back that up, he is second on the Flyers.

It's interesting to compare and contrast Torts with Keefe. Brodie is being scratched (or was scratched, can't bother to check), but when asked about it, Keefe answered without being confrontational. I'd love to get a psychologist's take on what makes people like Torts respond the way they do when especially in Tort's case, he genuinely seems like a good person and pleasant individual outside of anything that has to do with coaching an NHL team.

The game #2 benching is for him discussing it in detail and pretending he doesn't know why he is being benched. That is a retaliatory move by Torts. There is nothing wrong with holding yourself accountable or holding your team and your stars accountable, it should be done more often.

That being said, there are probably better ways of doing about it then this public fashion as open as it has become. His whole stick with the media reminds me of another blow hard who played the same game, Brian Burke. Everybody in the media was a ****ing parasite to him but then he was out of a job, no problem cashing media related chq's.

Best example I recall seeing in sports related to keeping players accountable is KNOWING when to push buttons. Tom Brady from the Patriots talked about how Bill Bellichick would tear into him in film study WHEN required to show the other players that everybody is equal.

He also benched Wes Welker, his star WR during a playoff game (1st Q I believe) after comments made to the media when he was told not to.

You don't need to bench one of your best players and your captain and make a big deal about it when your season is on the line. Sometimes these coaches need to bench themselves sometimes
