Buchnevich is arb eligible, FWIW. Any contract demands leaked? I'm going to guess he wanted $7M

It is interesting how everyone seems to use Dube as a trade chip instead of continuing to develop him. Is it because of Sutter’s criticism? He is still young and is still developing. He could still become a top six forward. He’s already a young, decent top nine forward that shows flashes of top six ability. If he finds consistency, he could easily be a great second line player with fantastic speed.

On a long-term deal, Buchnevich is going to be looking to get paid.
I'm intrigued to see what he signs, because I believe it'll give us a good indication of Mangiapane's future.

So a younger cost controlled Pitlick!

I would do Dube+2nd, but I did assume they worked out an extension already. Tougher call if there is risk of a 1 year rental.

1 year rentals aren't what this team needs.

Any competent GM (I use that loosely) would either get him re-signed mid season, or flip him for a haul at the deadline if he's having another year like last year. There really isn't a lot of risk here unless you're convinced Dube is going to be a star (which is yet to be seen but probably a big reach).

Yeah, the cost was low, but there’s a good chance Buchnevich just walks as a UFA next offseason.

Yeah, it's so hard to sell a near PPG, play driving winger as a FA rental?
If this is the price now, it's going way up in a few months.

In this cap market, it ain't as easy as it used to be. Otherwise why didn't NYR do it?

Yeah, for a FA rental you might even get... a lower end player and a 2nd rounder!
What an upgrade!

Makes you wonder who the Rangers are after in free agency, they have quite a bit of cap space currently. Eichel or Hamilton?

Which of these star player wants to sewer their career by going to the NYR. At least Dougie has a choice.

Except if the Flames are competing for a playoff spot in which case we know that won't happen.

Well, the risk would be that you end up with a worse player than Dube and a lower 2nd than you had before, but sure, lets do it for a few months of Buch.

Zibanejad 1 year to UFA. Probably a $8-$9M player.
Strome 1 year to UFA.
Fox 1 year to RFA.
Shesterkin currently RFA.
They will also have Lafreniere/Kakko coming up.
That cap space gets reduced pretty fast.
This is an absolute loss for the Flames but what are the Flames supposed to do? Only acquiring Eichel moves the needle at this point. Everything else is just lateral moves.

Well until highly productive, 26 year old players start going for complete garbage returns at the deadline, you can't really claim that to be reality.
Even so, if you can't confidently make the odd move like this to get your team out of a hole, you don't really deserve to be a GM in this league. More of the same action simply leads to more of the same result.

And by competing you mean "not mathematically eliminated yet" right?
