You can add they traded a future 1st to dump their 2013 1st as well.
They did make moves in 2018 to get back 5th overall picks from 2013 and 2015 so not just 1sts but high picks.

Pettersson is consistently the player that is deemed as untouchable. Even Hughes could be had for the right price but the messaging is Pettersson is off limits. The Flames are likely the last team in the league the Canucks would want to deal him considering all the talent we have acquired from the Canucks over the years.

That wouldn’t even be close to getting you Petterson.

Team is going to be tight against the cap why complicate that by shipping out your best prospect and a 1st in a deep draft to make 8th place.
The team is in need of some cheap young talent next season. With the extensions kicking in and Hanifin and Lindholm up for new deals we need all the cap space we can get.

Do not trade first round picks. At all. No matter who you add to this team, it's just nit worth it. If y9u add just about any 1 player to this team, they're still not a contender. Just making the playoffs shouldn't be the goal, that's ridiculous. Take a long look at this team, IMO they're lower to missing the playoffs than being a contender.
The Flames don't have a good prospect pool and they'll need some ELC's on the roster with the big contracts coming. Their best chance of actually improving is from within the organization.

Its funny how in Alberta one team won't rebuild and the other is in rebuild every year.

Either aim higher or just get the cheap depth blueliner. Not the middling middle of the lineup guy.

The Oilers destroyed us in the playoffs last season and are higher in the standings this season.
They haven’t been rebuilding for years, and have more playoff success than we do.
The days of us mocking them with any real ground to stand on are over. They shut that door when they absolutely dismantled us in the playoffs last year - and that #%^* should be something that this organization shouldn’t be okay with.
…good thing we can still mock them for being from Edmonton, but on the hockey side? Nope. We have no ground to stand on anymore.

I thought there was a rumour he wants out? Hard to make a guy untouchable if he doesn't want to be there.

IDK 4 first overalls including McDavid and they are virtually even with a team that has Sam Bennett as their highest ever draft pick

Sure we do. That franchise tanked so hard for so long and were so embarrassing the NHL has to change the lottery rules. Their mismanagement of prospects, picks, salary cap, player personnel, we absolutely can mock them and should. They have the best forward in the game by far and another in the top 5 and still can't put together a dominant season.

Well there are certainly players worth more than a mid first round pick. Obviously no rentals

It was a short series but this talk of being “destroyed” or “dismantled” is not really the case. The Flames lost 3 games where they were tied in the third period and in 2 of those games the Flames held multi-goal leads. Game 2 the questionable diving call on Gaudreau changed the momentum and the Coleman kick goal ruined game 5. No doubt it was a short series but outside of game 3 any of the games could have went either way.

The “they have more playoff success” is questionable too. They went one further round last year. And got whipped pretty badly by the Avs.
Prior to that, they got swept by the Jets. Prior to that they lost to Chicago (!) in the play-in. Prior to that they missed the POs 12 of 13 years.

Honestly tho, who gives a #### about the Oilers?
They live waaaaaaay to rent free on this forum.
I just care about the Flames and what they're doing. I'll be concern with the Oilers when the Flames are playing them, it's the final weeks of the season in the playoff race where Flames need Oiler loses, or the Oilers are in the playoffs.
Outside of that time they're irrelevant. Just like every other team in the league.

Really? They are #### just like Calgary. I like how you spice it up though.

HNIC:
Tochhet expected to named Canucks head coach on Monday
Gonchar and Foote may be joining Canucks front office
Canucks are separating the teams that are willing to part with 3 players including a top prospect for Horvat from those who aren't
Nothing imminent on Horvat
Toews and Kane won't be making any decisions until mid February
Paccioretty injuy might make it interesting on some of the big names on the trade market
Bruins and Pastrnak are inching toward a contract extension
Toronto and Edmonton among the teams looking into Gavrikov
Columbus are allowing teams to speak to Gavrikov
Columbus looking for a return similar to David Savard (1st + 3rd)
Potential change of scenery trades:
Jansen Harkins - always lights it up when sent to AHL and looking for an opportunity to establish in NHL
Riley Damiani - was one of the last cuts for the Stars
