The first huge moment of the Sled Island 2017 season is upon us. We are ecstatic to announce that visionary producer, rapper, DJ, label owner and filmmaker Flying Lotus will be joining us as guest curator of this year's festival!
In addition to putting his stamp on the festival through special programming choices, Flying Lotus will perform at The Palace Theatre (formerly Flames Central) on June 24, 2017.

This is interesting:
More Shows in Your Favourite Venues
Thanks for the memories, Olympic Plaza! This year, we’re saying goodbye to Olympic Plaza and adding more shows in the venues you love most, including the Central United Church, Flames Central and the brand new National Music Centre. Look for show details in spring 2017!

Oh man that's a bummer, when the weather was right it was hard to beat the plaza shows on a warm summer night. I love how they somehow got passed the puritan liquor laws and you were able to grab a beer and enjoy the show instead of being contained in a separate beer garden area.

I think the biggest problem with Olympic Plaza was its size. The appeal of most Sled Island acts isn't broad enough to fill the space with enough people. It just felt empty, no matter what.
I remember seeing Girl Talk there one year (when Girl Talk was a big name), and it was empty and felt silly. If it would have been at the Legion or somewhere smaller, the show would have been insane.

Rain has been the biggest problem at the Plaza, but when the weather cooperated, I had some great evenings there.
Where will the headliners play now?

In addition to curating, FlyLo will perform at the fest. He'll be joined by a truly eclectic batch of artists.
Confirmed performers include metalcore stalwarts Converge, legendary pop outsider Silver Apples, slowcore pioneers Low, indie pop artist Waxahatchee, punk outfit Cloud Nothings, black metal experimenters Wolves in the Throne Room, and folk performer Weyes Blood.
Rounding out the first fest announcement are jazz performer Hailu Mergia, post-hardcore weirdos Daughters, Canadian indie outfit Land of Talk, Thor Harris' new project Thor & Friends, Colin Stetson's experimental metal band Ex Eye, indie group Mothers, doom outfit King Woman and post-punk act New Fries.
Of course, this is just scratching the surface — when it takes place from June 21 to 25, Sled Island will feature more than 250 performers spread over multiple venues.

The first wave is meant to gently rock your boat.
The next ones will swamp you.
That’s the feeling you get from discussing with Maud Salvi the list of 15 names on the first wave of acts announced to play this year’s edition of the Sled Island alternative music and arts festival.
The second wave of artists will be announced March 14 and at that point prices will change.

It's been a while since Sled Island has had a lineup that really caught my eye. The first 15 bands is pretty underwhelming personally, but I hope I'm pleasantly surprised by the next wave!

The second wave of Sled Island 2017 acts has arrived! Today's list features a whopping 57 artists from around the world and right here at home, including picks from 2017 guest curator Flying Lotus. Read on for details!
Joining this year's lineup is West Coast hip-hop legend DJ Quik (playing The Palace Theatre on June 23), Japanese post-rock four-piece MONO (Japan) (who will play the beautiful Central United Church on June 23), Japanese pop-punk heroes Shonen Knife (playing the only Canadian date on their upcoming tour), futuristic techno and funk producer Jimmy Edgar, seminal punk bassist mike watt + The Missingmen (playing the beloved #1 Legion on June 24), pioneering Japanese garage-punk power-trio Guitar Wolf, creamy-smooth synth-pop group DIANA, cult favourite Canadian proto-punk legends Simply Saucer (making a very rare appearance at The Palomino on June 21), ambient synth experimentalist Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (also doing a residency at the National Music Centre), UK trap producer OZZIE, scruffy garage rock project Meatbodies, experimental psych and krautrock group Pinkish Black, Tuareg guitar three-piece Les Filles de Illighadad (embarking on their first North American tour), rank and ruthless noise-punk band Uniform (featuring members of The Men and York Factory Complaint), fuzzy Swami Records surf-pop group Mrs. Magician, offshoot of Tricky Woo and DFA 1979 American Lips and buzzy synth-pop project Half Waif.
As previously announced, Sled Island is excited to welcome visionary producer, rapper, DJ, label owner and filmmaker Flying Lotus as 2017 guest curator. Today’s announcement offers a first look at some of Flying Lotus’ selections, including the previously mentioned DJ Quik, digital funk party-starter Seven Davis Jr, fragmented ambient experimentalist Yves Tumor, ambient, breakcore and drone soundscaper Dedekind Cut, Tehran Conservatory of Music-trained experimental electronic artist Ash Koosha and zigzagging hip-hop talent Tierra Whack. Additional selections will be announced in the coming weeks.
Even more artists announced today include ANAMAI, Expanda Fuzz, FAITH HEALER, Fake Palms, Feminal Fluids, FRIGS, Isaac Rother & The Phantoms, JLK & The Assassins, jo passed, jock tears, Living Hour, Man Meat, Marlaena Moore, Mauno, NEEDLES//PINS, No More Moments, Porcelain Raft, Protruders, respectfulchild, SIANspheric, Sightlines, Silver Dapple, The Avulsions, The Sorority, Un Blonde and WASIU.
