I thought Time has stated multiple, well, times that the POTY does not equal ‘best’. It is the person who was ‘in the news the most’ ...or most influential ...or most noteworthy.
It’s not supposed to be an MVP award.
Yeah, this happens literally every December. People think it's some kind of award or honour, but it's actually the editorial board of Time deciding who (or what) was the most influential newsmaker of the year. The actual criteria to determine PotY, as defined by Time, is as follows: "a person, a group, an idea, or an object that for better or for worse has done the most to influence the events of the year."
Based on that, it probably should have been the coronavirus itself on the cover, but the medical professionals responding to the crisis are a decent proxy for the story that dominated 2020. It still annoys me that Time's editors were too cowardly to make Osama bin Laden Person of the year in 2001. By their own selection criteria, nobody influenced the events of that year more than he did.

Same with this year, if you're talking strictly newsmaker, it has to be Trump. I think that newsmaker is a big part of it but not entirely it (anymore).

Nah, COVID-19 is a far bigger story than Trump this year.

I see your point in a literal sense, but as a business decision that essentially would have been a request to "Please Come Boycott Us And Protest Non-Stop till We're Bankrupt"

It's interesting to scroll through that list, especially deep into the past. Hilter won in 1938 (though they clearly depicted him as negative with the cover illustration being "Hitler Plays the Hymn of Hate")

They seem to have become reluctant to name bad people. Maybe the public is having more trouble distinguishing between important people and good people. Or maybe boycotts and censure of Time are considered more of a threat in the era of social media.

It's crazy how you could make a case in a year like this for Donald Trump, George Floyd, RBG, Joe Biden, Cuomo, Fauci, Boris Johnson, Greta Thunberg, Bill Gates, Firefighters, etc. but this is by far the greatest choice. Just gives you an idea of how much has happened this year.
Wasn't Russic saving a family from a wolf attack this year, too?
Edit - just checked. That was last year. Man, time flies.
With publishing schedules and stuff, if it's going to be on newsstands this week, it would have already been printed and many people would have seen it, so it could be real.

There are apparently 4 finalists and health care workers are one of them (along with Fauci). The other three are: Biden, Trump, BLM movement
Hard to see anyone but health care workers winning though.
I think underpaid essential service workers (logistics and food supply)would better than medical workers. They are the backbone that kept the world from crumbling this year.
And if you want to look at the medical field the vaccinologists who have beaten this thing deserve special recognition.
I suppose I’m missing the point though in which case it’s clearly SARS -Cov-2 or perhaps a non-medical mask.
