Nice.

Amazingly, I think the team has switched from needing significant RW help to now actually being deeper on the right side than the left (not high-end depth, but bottom 6 depth, which is mostly RHS now).

After Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Bennett, we are looking at Mangiapane and Dube. I am not sure that Rychel takes that spot away, but he is a guy that is okay to sit upstairs (Mangiapane and Dube need to play).

With Neal, Lindholm, Frolik, Czarnik, Lazar, Hathaway and Foo on the right side, Shinkaruk wasn't cracking the lineup.

So the depth now looks like:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Neal
Bennett - Jankowski - Frolik
Rychel - Ryan - Czarnik
Mangiapane - Lazar - Hathaway
Dube - Quine - Foo

Pretty good balance. And a good chunk of those guys can be slotted into different positions (Lindholm, Tkachuk, Bennett, Frolik, Ryan, Lazar, and Dube)

Man it is crazy that just 5 years after that draft this is the 7th forward from the first round that will be part of the Flames.

2013 - 6th pick Monahan, 22nd pick Poirier, 28th pick Klimchuk
2016- acquire 24th pick Shinkaruk for Granlund
2017- acquire 17th pick Lazar for a 2nd and Jokkipakka
2018- acquire 5th pick Lindholm in the blockbuster from this past June
2018- acquire 19th pick Rychel for Shinkaruk

I think this is a meaningless trade but Shinkaruk wasn’t going to pan out so I like the move as much as anyone could considering I think neither player is a long term NHLer

Agreed. I think if anyone should be concerned over this acquisition its Hathaway or Lazar

I like it. I don't see a NHL career for Hunter. Kerby can still hash out a career in a bottom 6 role.

Why? Wouldn't their reaction be similar to ours with two longshot players being swapped?

He seems like the kind of guy who could be good in the bottom 6, whereas Shinkaruk seemed like he would have needed to be in the top 6.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but does anyone remember off-hand what Montreal gave up to get him from Columbus?

They (Toronto) got him from Columbus for Harrington and a 5th
Montreal got him in the Plekanec trade I believe, Google failing me...

Here we go:

The Canadiens dealt Plekanec and prospect Kyle Baun to the Leafs on Sunday for defenceman Rinat Valiev, forward Kerby Rychel and a 2018 second-round draft pick.

Montreal has enough bottom 6 forwards but not enough top 6. So they are hoping that they catch lightning in a bottle and find some NHL level skill.
Probably won't happen but they must figure worth a shot. Speaks to how low they've sunk.
End of the day probably a swap of minor leaguers, but both team hope that the acquired player will blossom into an NHLer - Calgary a bottom 6 who can score, Montreal a top 6 or top 9.

Meh. much ado about nothing. Can't really see the NHL working out for either at this stage. I would still call it a win for us though

this is like when that guy started with a paper clip and kept trading it until it turned into a house. in a couple of seasons we are going to end up with McDavid or MacKinnon from the Granlund pick.
Griffin Reinhart might be availible.

Probably just end up as an AHL deal but I like it regardless.

Pretty funny seeing so many 2013 picks on the Flames. If only we could snag 1 or 2 of the top 4, we'd be in great shape!

If the Flames somehow acquired 7 1sts prior to that draft and that summer we got to talk about Lindholm, Lazar, Rychel, and Shinkaruk on top of Monahan, Poirier, and Klimchuk we would be over the moon excited.

There was significant hype around the 4 year players we have acquired since that draft.

People would be penciling in future lineups of

Shinkaruk-Monahan-Rychel
Poirier-Lindholm-Lazar

As we sit here today Monahan is by far the best player of that group and followed by Lindholm. Other than that maybe Klimchuk has a shot to make it t the NHL. Lazar appears to be on the verge of falling out of the league. Poirier is a free agent and Shinkaruk/Rychel have been with multiple organizations (3 Shinkaruk, 4 for Rychel) and neither has yet to crack a roster for more than a cup of coffee.
