Default TSN: Gio injury puts Brodie for RHS forward on hold. Bennett change of scenery

per insider trading:

Lebrun: the sense from some teams was that Brodie could have been had for a top 6 RHS forward but Gio's injury has put all hands on deck.

one source suggested to LeBrun the Flames may even try to add a depth d-man now

Brodie may still be moved but Gio's injury makes it harder for the Flames to deal him

Dreger: Bennett's name has been out there a long time.
Flames are not shopping him and don't want to trade him
Bennett may want a change of scenery. Wants to prove that he can be a top 6 forward

I'd have taken a flyer on Bennett 7 months ago. Now, not so much.

How about Bennett tries to focus on showing he should be a top 6 forward here...

I'm as big a Bennett fan as there is, but he simply doesn't seem to have the right tools to be a top 6 forward.

I'd be very surprised to see him put it together offensively. I completely get the desire to get the opportunity elsewhere though. We've heard many coaches here talk about the difficulty of finding a great spot to utilize Bennett.

Apparently burke said the flames are shopping Bennett hard

But dregs says they aren't shopping him at all.

I genuinely do not know who to believe

Treliving has shown he moves guys that don’t want to be here. Hamilton, Neal, Frolik.

My speculation is Bennett has asked for the change of scenery.

I somewhat disagree.

I think the tools are there, much in the same way they were there for Jake Virtanen. We've said all the same things about Jake in Vancouver. It's his break out and Gaudette showing that he can make it as an NHL center that have made me covet a player like Bennett less.

Both can be true and just dependent on the source. Lots of teams could be inquiring on Bennett but the Flames aren't openly shopping him.

I'm a little concerned that Brody is the defenseman the Flames are willing to part with. It would be so Flames to overpay to keep a worse player like Hamonic and trade the better one away.

Maybe they see no chance of Brodie staying here.

It makes me wonder what metrics the team is looking at when I hear stuff like that. As a fan with little knowledge about advanced analytics, but with eyeballs, Hamonic looks consistently worse than Brodie.
He's maybe a little more "rugged" than Brodie, but so was Kris Russell.

Ponder and Steinberg hinted that the Flames and Hamonic were inching closer to an extension a couple of weeks ago.

Well, he has to be given that opportunity here. I don't mean for one period either. I mean an extended look in the top 6. Otherwise who can blame him?

Yeah I don’t get why the Flames would trade Brodie at all - unless he doesn’t want to come back. That’s the only reasoning I could see.

Maybe the reasons are financial. Maybe BT has had initial conversations with both players agents. Maybe Hamonic would prefer to stay and at a reasonable salary and Brodie wants a hefty raise. We don't know. I agree I would rather keep Brodie but if he is looking for big numbers and term that may be why.

He's been with the Flames for like a decade now, you really don't know it's Brodie? I only say this because I've noticed it a few times now.

I can see why Bennett wants out. If that's what he needs, move him. Wish you well.

Also, it's a little too convenient that Gios injury stays Brad's trigger finger. I'm sure it was itching in the first place. Hand sitter of the year Treliving is.

Didn’t hear that. I could see that being very unpopular.

I have relatively little faith in Treliving at this current point in time.

Bennett should want out. Cory Sarich was speaking the other day about players hating not knowing who they are going to be playing with from one game to the next.

Never mind game to game, Ward treats each period like a new margarita Monday. Unless you are Johnny’s high school Buddy.

And if Brodie was legitimately available over Hamonic, and a Hamonic extension being discussed, I seriously question his ability to assess defenders.

Maybe good for him being a hand sitter if the pro scouting is indeed questionable
