Okay, maybe this isn't a "cool" choice, but I still really like Billy Talent. Relatively straightforward pop/punk/metal, but I think their music is really well crafted and often has some interesting perspectives on well worn topics. They aren't going to change your world, but they're still fun to listen to.
I was shocked to see that Pitchfork didn't even deign a review for any of their albums. I think they deserve better than that.
For you trivia buffs, they got their name from one of the characters in the famous indie Canadian film Hard Core Logo.

What do you think of his new song? It’s cool that he’s trying something different but I can’t say if I like it. It sounds off, like when other country artists have tried to “rock”.

He's a genius. I'm into it. But I kinda hear ya.

I enjoy Billy Talent, but American critics probably just saw them as a Canadian clone of "At The Drive In" (a band which had a lot clones). I've always thought it weird that no one really mentions that "Try Honesty" is a ripoff of "One Armed Scissor".

Huh, I listened to a lot of both bands in high school and never made that connection. Now that you've pointed it out, it's pretty obvious.
