Seattle: Recommendations & Travel Tips
I saw a couple threads combining Vancouver & Seattle, but neither specific to Seattle alone.
Any tips greatly appreciated with respect to:
- things to do
- where to stay
- where to eat
- recommended duration of stay (subjective, I know)
Planning to go early June.
Thanks in advance!

If you don't mind being down by the airport, and you don't need a pool, Cedarbrook Lodge is amazing.
For restaurants, Carta de Oaxaca is one of the best places I've ever eaten.

I stayed at the Courtyard Seattle Downtown/Pioneer Square a couple years ago when I went down to watch the Chiefs. It had only been open a few months so everything was nice and modern and clean. Nice big rooms with a huge bathroom. 40" tv's that actually had HD hooked up (how many hotels have HD tv's with SD feeds?). It was within a 10 minute walk from the Stadium. And about 15 from the Fish Market. Weekend rates were very reasonable. I still have the confirmation saved on my phone and the bill came to $298.25 for two nights, $129 for the room with $20.12 in taxes, plus $26 per day for valet parking.

Salty's on Alki Beach, a great view of downtown across the sound. Beautiful on a clear night. Not overly expensive, I would think in the $50/person range with wine.

As my handle suggests, I recommend doing a Safeco Field tour and grabbing a game if you can, but I can't say enough about the tour. It gets better every time and the passion the tour guides have for the park is infectious.
Food wise, happy hour at the Brooklyn is unreal. Prices for great food that you'll never see in Canada (although prices for dining are lower everywhere there).

Seattle has a million great restaurants.
I really liked Umi sushi, wild ginger, and restaurant Zoe. I stayed at the Seattle sheraton a dozen times probably and quite liked it. But a corporate hotel.
If it is your thing there are lots of wineries to check out around Seattle too.
Great place.

I always stay at the Westin in Bellevue. Shopping is better, as the mall is right across the street. Crowds are way smaller. The city is cleaner and all the homeless people are in Seattle. It's only a 15 minute drive to downtown Seattle. There is also a bus that picks you up 2 blocks from the Westin and drops you off right at the stadiums. The hotel is about half the price of a decent hotel downtown Seattle and includes parking.

Don't get fooled by hotels by the airport for really cheap. The airport is a ways away from Seattle's downtown.
The hip neighborhoods are Capitol Hill, Fremont, Wallingford and Ballard. If you want to check out Seattle in all its hipster, queer, vegan glory Capitol Hill is awesome. The others are cool too just a lot more toned down.
Pike's Place is a tourist dead zone as far as food goes.
Thai Tom's in the U district is amazing.
So is Paseo's in Fremont and Ballard.
I recommend staying downtown or on Aurora.
If it's a clear day the University of Washington Campus is gorgeous. You can get a clear look of Mt. Rainier which is amazing.
So is Golden Gardens in Ballard.
Seattle is a gorgeous city.
Be prepared for heavily trafficked roads, hills and strange intersections. It's not a fun city to drive in.

But if you're near the airport, there's a great train system that will take you right into downtown.

I've only stopped over in Seattle for a night as part of a longer road trip, so I can't offer much advice on the city. I *can* tell you that driving west in Washington on the I90 from Couer d'Alene / Spokane to Seattle is a really boring drive.
