While that may or may not be real, let's not pretend that the treatment of Phillip is out of step with the cultural moors of 12th century England.
But most of Braveheart, you empathize with Edward II because his dad is such a nasty SOB. I've never read him as anything but a sympathetic character, as trapped by his circumstances as anyone in the film.
As far as making the English inhumane... that's a trope of Hollywood movies going back decades - you make your enemy cartoonishly evil so the audience knows who to root for. It's a thing from Death Wish to Titanic.
And from the perspective of the English, they're trying to crush a rebellion. Longshanks is brutal, and he's playing the long game. It's all perfectly in character in the context of the story, regardless of whether or not it factually happened.
And lots of characters think Wallace can do wrong - that's why the other nobles *spoilers* do what they do.
Regarding bigotry, well, it's a movie about a revolution. You don't have a violent revolution if you have a good relationship with your overlords.
Revenge porn makes for the best movies, btw. And the more righteous, the better.
To conclude, Mel Gibson is not a nice man or a good person.
|
My take away from Edward the II's portrayal was that he was more interested in putting on fancy clothes with his partner than ruling the kingdom, which wasn't remotely close to the reality.
In reality, Edward the II was extremely ambitious and very much interested in being king. He was also a large person who was known for his ability to appeal to the lower classes.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward...and#Abdication
Quote:
Edward grew up to be tall and muscular, and was considered good-looking by the standards of the period.[34] He had a reputation as a competent public speaker and was known for his generosity to household staff.[35] Unusually, he enjoyed rowing, as well as hedging and ditching, and enjoyed associating with labourers and other lower-class workers.[36][e] This behaviour was not considered normal for the nobility of the period and attracted criticism from contemporaries.[38]
|
That's nothing like his portrayal in the film.
He was forced to abdicate, but did so very begrudgingly and only after threats to himself and his family. Edward II died in custody, but there is almost zero evidence about how. And no credible evidence that he was attacked with a poker.
Yes, he did have an overly close relationship with one of his advisors, and that gets translated into the film as him being a super effeminate and weak person. It's literally just a bad stereotype of what a homosexual person is like, and that pretty much sums up how the film deals with the entirety of its subject matter....but don't worry middle aged Mel Gibson is here to save the day by banging the queen....he only does this after being seduced of course, because he's faithful to his dead wife and such a great guy.
I actually still enjoy many parts of the film, but there are certain parts that ar just pure cringe. Now that I'm the age that Gibson was when he starred in Braveheart, I find the level of immaturity in his portrayal even more baffling. It reminds me of the way Cartman or Mac (from It's Always Sunny) portray themselves in their weird hero fantasies.
I don't think this way about all Gibson films. Lethal Weapon and Road Warrior have aged great. IMO it was the success of Braveheart that really pushed Gibson over the edge, and I think he actually thought he was Braveheart. He continued to star in and produce a series of movies afterwards with the same basic hero against the inhuman empire themes....all not so good.

I haven't seen Avatar. I figured I'd check it out at some point, but now it's at the point of me not seeing it for so long so why should I bother?
I also never had an interest in Harry Potter and have completely ignored that series.
I haven't even seen any of The Godfather movies. Those seem like movies that would be right up my alley too but I just haven't seen them. No real opportunity nor desire to make time to do so. They are on my list but not a priority to get done right away. Maybe someday.

I saw it. I thought it was well done. However it was extremely disturbing for my wife and I to see. We left scared of the future because we just watched a show about a character who has so many parallels to our nephew.

That’s Gibson’s forte. A sado-masochistic streak runs through his work.
In many of his films the protagonist is a widower or his wife is killed.
Mad Max (wife and child killed)
Lethal Weapon (wife killed)
Braveheart (wife almost raped, then killed)
The Patriot (widower)
Signs (wife killed)
Edge of Darkness (daughter murdered)
In many of them, the protagonist is betrayed, disfigured, tortured.
Mad Max 2 (tortured)
Man Without a Face (disfigured)
Braveheart (tortured)
Payback (betrayed and shot)
Passion of the Christ (basically torture porn)
Apocalypto (tortured)

Have you at least seen Terminator 2: Judgement Day? That's something that can't be missed. For me, I saw T2 first when I was a kid and I never was able to appreciate T1 when I saw it later on in life.
I still don't really enjoy that film and it feels like its not in the same universe as its successor. It has some great one-liners and Cameron writing but I just don't feel that movie at all while many people seem to hold it in such high esteem. Of course I understand all the budget and filming limitations behind it and Cameron's rise and inventiveness is always a great story in an of itself.
Die Hard was ruined for me the moment continuity was broken when he climbed into a vent with a white wife-beater and when he crawled out it was olive-green. You can't explain that as being "dirt" the way it comes across on screen. It bothers me to this day.

Ha, for the record I was of course joking. I've seen each LOTR probably a dozen times, read the books twice, and may or may not have participated in online hate group discussions focusing on the hobbit trilogy

Def agree to a point, but to me what makes the first one amazing is that the 2nd one is THAT much better after seeing them in order. T2 is amazing on it's own but there's another level when you know the backstory of Reese, and why Sarah was terrified of Arnold at first.
I saw the 2nd one first but I wish I did see them in order
But in defense of the first one, best description I've read was that it was epic on a whole 'nother level, until T2 came and redefined what epic was

Very meh for me. Made much better by the fact he wasn't in it. I was more referring to the movies he stared in, like the Patriot. Any movie where he didn't play the do no wrong hero was made better without him actually in it.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate all of his work. I even like Braveheart still, but it's definitely taken a huge step down from the amazing film I thought i was 14 in the 90s.

I held out in not seeing that forever but was forced into it at a friend's place when I couldn't leave. Not a good movie.
I haven't seen any of the Bourne films. Haven't seen Frozen.
