True, and that's why it's a personal opinion, not written in store undeniable fact.
But you can't seem to accept that. Let's take me, for instance...I told you I like Sci-Fi.
So let's say I watch 1000 sci fi movies, and Lost in Translation. While the sci fi movies range from amazing to horribad, Lost in Translation will still be the worst I have seen, because I don't like the genre of movie to begin with (I just read the synopsis for it, and it sounds like a movie that would put me to sleep inside of 10 minutes...). To me, even a bad sci-fi movie is better than a critically acclaimed drama. A lot of people feel that way about their preferred genre. They'd rather watch a bad example of their preferred genre over an excellent example of a genre they don't like.
I don't "need to watch more movies"...I've seen 1001 movies. it's just that 'your' movie, LoT, is of a genre I don't like, while the others are, good or bad. So, in my personal opinion, LoT would be the worst of the 1001 movies I've seen...regardless of it's critical acclaim.
You may not need to watch more movies, but if you watched 1000 sci-fi movies and Lost in Translation, and then said Lost in Translation was the worst movie you'd ever seen simply because of genre, your opinion is pretty narrow minded.
That's a pretty weak way to judge the quality of a movie. Especially because the Sci-Fi genre has some of the cheesiest #### ever made.

Exactly. But if that's what a person LIKES...the best drama in the world isn't going to interest them.
This is apparently a much more difficult concept than I originally believed.

Yeah, but people like Trump too. That doesn't mean their criteria evaluation should be taken very seriously. Especially if there's seemingly no ability to evaluate something on its merits and not solely its genre.
I won't count the awful movies I saw as a kid in the 70s and 80s (Condor Man anyone?). Or all the terrible B movies I watched on VHS back in the day (Laserblast, the Driller Killer, etc.). Or movies that I streamed at home and couldn't make it through.
So worst movies I watched in the theatre as an adult:
Independence Day
Face/Off

I don't recall many times where someone noticeably walked out of a movie. Except once.
Way back in the day we went to see Contact with Jodi Foster in the theater. It was packed. It is a long philosophical movie without much action. I didn't mind it but I can see why other people might not like it.
But what was weird is that these two people sat thru like two and a half goddamn hours only to walk out right near the end when she's talking to her dad/not dad alien.
I get walking out. But it took you 150 minutes to figure out this movie wasn't for you? What the hell were you waiting for? You thought maybe after two hours of slow, plodding philosophical talk they'd bust out the ray guns and we'd get an Independence Day type ending?
It's been probably 20 years and I still want to know what prompted those people to sit thru the entire goddamn movie just to leave 10 minutes early.

Condor Man as a kid was great. The car chases, the bombastic CONDOR MAN! Laser boats!
You, sir, are wrong!

I didn't last through all 3 hours of Boyhood. props to the cast and crew I guess for sticking with the thing for 12 years, but the result was not so much an actual movie as a bunch of loosely connected episodes with no real plot, horrific child acting, and in-your-face nostalgia shots of the popular song/video game/gadget of the era.
sure it won an oscar, but I haven't heard anyone so much as even mention it again since, much less try to sit through it for a rewatch.
The only 2 movies I have ever walked out of in the theater were Bruno and Kill Bill 2 (and almost Funny People, but somehow made it through that garbage).
I have watched some utter trash at home with with wife, but I cant even remember what some of those movies were called. At least I can fall asleep on the couch.
