Wouldn't put much value in what management and coaches say in terms of injuries statuses at this point in the season. I think everyone knew that his injury would be weeks not days.
I just hope they don't ask him to step in at 90-95% because it's crunch time and risk re-aggravating the injury.
Contrary to what many believe, we're not out of the race yet, but if Smith comes back too early and hurts himself again, we may as well fold for the year.

Gillies May look nervous but I’m not sure why everyone is so down on him. He’s looked good at times and is a rookie. You have to develop goalies.

I'm not down on him per se, but he is just not ready yet.
He bobbles a couple more of those long ones and he may be destroyed for good.

Agree with Transplant. He needs to develop in the AHL and the baptism by fire right now is 50/50 if it's helping or hurting. He isn't consistent from minute to minute let alone game to game. I have nothing at all to go by but what I've gleaned from people who play the position and I believe a lot is mental and having to keep yourself in the game no matter where the puck is. The time to focus is likely condensed in the NHL and he needs to learn that. I would imagine if he goes back to the AHL he'll be able to work on that and hopefully be a better goalie for it and there will be fewer swings from Kipper like stops to Hiller/Elliott like stinkers.

This stint will be good for Gillies' development, but I think he needs to spend more time in the AHL. Take what he learned here and go back down and get more games under his belt as a starter.

Maybe having Smith around the two young guys will have a calming influence on them, give them some confidence.
Or hoping this will happen.

The problem is, the guy who is supposed to develop him is Jordan Sigalet who doesn't have the best resume on developing goalies. Unless we are talking about developing them for the KHL.

Awesome. Would be a huge boost to get him back soon

Versteeg would be a huge boost to third line. Nothing against Hathaway but he is a 4th line player. If Smith comes back in next game or 2, it could make for an interesting push for playoff spot .

Good to hear Versteeg getting some time in before joining the big club.
Regarding the goalies, I personally feel that Rittich has looked the part of an NHL goaltender for a lot of the year. I think he had his first struggles immediately after Smith went down, but given the injury, was forced to handle the adversity head on the next game, rather than getting to go back to the bench for a few games to reflect/recover.
Gilles seems to be extremely shaky. I don't know if it's just nerves, or something more foundational, but the number of times he misplays long shots, bobbling the puck, gives me the impression that he's not ready for the NHL just yet. I'd love to hear any folks who watch him in the AHL comment on how his game has compared to when he's in games with the heat and the confidence he exudes there.

It’s been suggested that Monahan has been playing through an injury. Do we know the nature of the injury?

It will be huge if Smith and Versteeg are back next week or by the weekend.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Versteeg
Lazar - Stajan - Brouwer

Not sure what the Monahan injury is but if it dates back a while that sure explains a lot of the first lines recent struggles with Ferland and Monahan both playing through injuries.

Statistically speaking they're basically the same.
David Rittich: GAA: 2.96 - SV% 0.904
Jon Gillies: GAA: 2.78 - SV% 0.904

Rittich IMO has had better performances when he plays well. His stats are significantly affected by a few really bad starts - Vegas, Colorado, Boston and a couple times where he came in when the team sucked and Smith was yanked (and in a couple of those Calgary made a comeback due to score effects and he got tagged with the L).

Gilles is weird, he's been an absolute wall but with two complete mental collapses once per game.

What is the deal with Shore? Why hasn't he drawn into the lineup yet? Is it cause they don't want to mess up the chemistry or is it because Stajan has to get to 1,000 games?
