And NJD made a quality offer then, Calgary ownership nixed it. Now even with elite goaltending NJD won't make playoffs.

So again, why in hell would age 35 and 36 markstrom be worth Dawson Mercer

It's not just about this or next season though! Mercer (if that is indeed the ask) for many years to come is worth way more than one run at the playoffs, unless obviously that ends with the cup. Regardless Markstrom is 34, has a chance to regress plus Wolf needs to play.

Maybe so they can make the playoffs in 2024-25? Not that hard to figure out, is it?

Based on trades that have occurred in the past I'd strongly disagree with that statement.

I’m at the Journey concert at the Dome… I’m not even 40 (39)

Lights on at the owner suite but nobody is there.

I can only assume Edwards, Conroy, Maloney, dissentower, sec14 are working hard behind the scenes.

I'd rather have 23 year old Mercer than 35 year old Markstrom.

If Swayman hits the trade market I'd be open to a swap there.

From what I've seen it was Holtz for Markstrom (2 mill retained)

A team NEEDS a goalie performing to go anywhere.

It might not have to be at a Vezina level, but the middle of the pack for starters at the bare minimum in order to compete for the cup.

Without that, everything above the goalie collapses. They're absolutely integral, and New Jersey is learning that lesson this year.
I think you missed the obvious counter... Goalies get traded for less because there are less of them. Most teams only have 2 spots on their roster for a goalie, so there are only 64 NHL goalie jobs at a time.

Also, I am not sold that goalies will stay 'cheap'. Even if we are ignoring Bobrovsky and Vasilevskiy for the moment, the next wave of star goalies are coming up with Oettinger, Swayman, and Shesterkin all likely looking at big raises as their contracts come up.

Would be a good add, but probably costs as much as Saros. Wasnt the ask Mercer, 1st, casey, and holtz or some bull####. Goodluck with that. Just like everyone said market changes, right now it seems goalie market is hot.

Beyond awful. Fitz has been trying to dump Holtz, he's rapidly falling in their depth chart. Holtz would not even be worth the price of retaining 2M for 2+ seasons.

I agree. Plus once a team find a good goalie fit, they hold onto them like a precious diamond. It is only the goalies who aren’t a good fit who get traded… or they are traded for a king’s (or devil’s) ransom

Either the Devils want to roll the dice on those odds or they don't. The Flames price is set.

Given that they continue to boomerang back says that they think Markstrom can be that guy.

Trying to argue down the inherent value of goalies to the fans of a team that is seeing first hand the inherent value of a goalie by the fact that they're still in the playoff hunt despite dressing a roster of journeymen seems rather tone deaf and counterproductive.

Time to deal with the reality that this is what their needed goalie upgrade will cost them.
The Devils do have a hole at goaltender. Fitzgerald will continue to look around for a fair price on an upgrade.

Markstrom is not some guaranteed solution. He costs 6 mill, is 34 (the recent history on aging goalies is not pretty).

Markstrom is a large cause of why the flames missed the playoffs in 20-21 and 22-23. He #### the bed vs the oilers in 21-22.

Here's how I know Markstrom at 6 mill isn't worth the moon. Because 30 year old Markstrom at 6 mill (coming off a 4th place vezina finish) was able to be had for FREE as a UFA.

Only because the Nucks couldn’t pay him and Demko. But nice try

No wonder there's no deal yet, you get to drive off the lot with a Porsche if you want to pay for a VW
