RIP Schanks Sports Bar and Grill franchise
COVID claims another business.
Been a Calgary institution for a long long time. (26 years apparently)

They were already struggling mightily before Covid. Brewhouse does everything they do but better. Massive real estate with bad food, high prices and bad service is never a recipe for success.

That's too bad, finally went there in March. It was nice.

RIP. I had my first legal beers at Shanks south on my 18th. I wanted to try a bunch of beers so had a Canadian, a Kokanee, and a Coors light haha.
Definitely a lot of memories watching hockey and football at both locations during my university days. Not really a place I’d want to go to now in my late 30s though and I get how the business is unsustainable especially with Covid restrictions.

I'm surprised the South location lasted as long as it did.
The last time I was there and it was busy was probably 10 years ago.
I was there on a Saturday night in early spring last year and beside my group, there were maybe 5-10 people in there.
Fine for a small bar, but but for that cavernous venue.

It’s weird that there’s people celebrating a bar closing...
Not the greatest place but definitely some fond memories there.
Job loss and business closure doesn’t make me happy

Yeah as a sports-loving 18-22 year old, I absolutely loved Schanks, both locations. I definitely grew out of it but for that specific demographic at that time in history, it was a great place.
The last time I was there was in 2013 as part of a team building event with work (golf simulator). I couldn't believe how it was basically exactly the same except they took out the fun stuff like the beach volleyball court, the bowling, the mini golf. The TVs looked old and colour fading. It was basically a sports pub but in a giant warehouse.
That's where I celebrated New Years Eve Y2K too. It was a nightmare trying to get a cab at 4 am on the outskirts of the city like that. Remember when Ralphy decreed the bars could stay open for that night?
Lots of foggy memories of Schanks, that's for sure.

I fondly recall watching a lot of sporting events at Schanks over the decades so this news saddens me. I don't frequent it anymore but the odd time I would go there as others in this thread have said it was largely empty and I am surprised they could sustain the business as long as they did.

Yeah, even though I get how such a cavernous place went under, I still found that news really sad. Had quite a few birthdays that started there, as it's like Chuck E. Cheese for adults. Trying to drunkenly mini golf around people after an errant shot always cracked me up. Watched a couple Super Bowls there as well, and some of the 2002 Olympic men's hockey games. Always had a great time there, that really sucks this happened. RIP Schanks

I used to go there more frequently during my university days and early 20s. Caught a few playoff games there and it used to be a fun vibe then.
Lately the only times I had gone in, was for the CP draft.
It would be missed, though it was tough for it to compete since the food was sub-par and so many more places have opened up with excellent beer selections and that can act as a sports bar.

Seems like everyone has the same story....ie. had a great time there 10-20 years ago (I spent Y2K there myself), but haven't been there in forever. I'm surprised it's lasted this long.
Reminds me of the classic Fotze post about Chief Chiniki burning down. "I, too, have many fond memories of driving by it and never going in."

Great sports pub 15 years ago. Now, not so much. A place stuck in stasis on multiple fronts that probably would have lasted longer if they updated everything.
Thanks for the memories! Time for something new.

RIP Schanks.
I think that place may have shone a little brighter in the age before smartphones.
