Man that’s a rough move for the Pens, they need to start looking at getting younger and cheaper, not the opposite

Good, then maybe a Noah Hanifin trade is more likely to happen if there was a team who lost out on Karlsson.

I actually disagree.
Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are all but guaranteed to retire as Pens. They won’t ever completely bottom out with those 3 on the roster. They are already locked into being an older team for the next three seasons.
They might as well go out and acquire the reigning Norris winner who likely won’t be all that expensive to get given his contract. Makes them better.
Everyone knows the terrible, lean years are coming. Makes no sense for them to stand pat and be a playoff bubble team. Young and cheap players won’t be available to help them in the next three seasons given their prospect pool

The Pens would have to be the oldest team in the league if they pull off that trade.

They do have a fairly unique situation. I agree with what you said.

The decision to push all the chips in was made last season when the ownership group decided they wanted to keep the gang together, and Malkin and Letang were both extended.

Was listening to a Pens reporter on the radio recently and it's well accepted that they're all in.
They know a pretty terrible team is in their future and another long rebuild, but they're delaying that reality until the Crosby era is gone.

Pittsburgh is going to be so, so bad once Crosby and friends hang em up. But it's the Pens, they'll probably luck themselves into yet another generational talent.

So full cap hit to the Pens they just get to dump Granlund and Petry to make it work?

Second time Hoffman has been traded to San Jose. Wonder if they keep him this time

I bet Petry is happy to be heading back to Montreal. Didn't he recently leave with a little animosity towards management? Then again they changed all the Management so he may be happy to go back.

got Karlsson, offloaded both Granlund and Petry, paid a 1st and 2nd. Could have been worse for Pittsburgh I guess

That is a lot of moving parts.
Seems like Pittsburgh gave up pretty much everything not nailed down. Hope it works out for them.
Who’s backing up there now? Might be a Vladar spot.
