Isn't the issue with Fox that he's not only small, but not a standout skater? Ryan Ellis, for example, is a very good skater.

UTURE CONSIDERATIONS - RANKED 36TH OVERALLFox is an average-size defenceman who is confident in joining the rush, and will get pucks on net from anywhere in the offensive zone. His point wrist shot is quick and accurate. He displays efficient puck control in transition, a nd often shows his impressive top-end speed while joining the rush. He was arguably the best defenceman on the U18 squad this year. Fox is very confident with the puck and displays great patience. He doesn’t panic at the offensive zone blueline when he is pressured by forwards and keeps his poise, making smart decisions. He was an important part of the power play this season with his calm play and good set-up ability.

Fox needs to imorove his footspeed or else he is a young Wideman.

Ryan Ellis was never noted as a great skater. Perhaps he is now but skating was the weakness in his game.

Wideman was a liability out there because he couldn't skate at the NHL level?
I should add that I don't think Fox's skating is a problem. He more than keeps up in a fast paced college game and was top shelf at the WJHC.

So much of a liability that he played over 800 games. If Fox plays 800 games it would be an amazing pick

Seriously. Dude scored 56 points at age 32, and was a .5 ppg player (or better) for like 5-6 straight years. Getting that out of the second round is a coup. This is like saying having a prospect who is the next Dany Heatley would be a bad thing.

I think the point was "young" Wideman. Any team would like a young Wideman.

I think his coming out party will be at next years WJC. He already had a phenomenal college freshman year, and played respectably for an 18 year old at that tournament. This summer he wowed the American staff at the summer showcase and was getting Duncan Keith comparisons.
Quote:
He's grown so much. Last year we didn't play him in the final 10 mins against Canada. Tonight, we didn't take him off.
|
Quote:
He’s taking it to another level. Last year he was a designated hitter on our team, coming off the bench from an offensive standpoint and making plays for us. He’s at a whole other level for us right now. … He’s comfortable now playing the game in any situation for 60 minutes. That’s a pretty special player. We all see it from the offensive side but he can handle tough minutes too.

There was even rumblings that he could go and play for the American team at the Olympics. He will be a very fun prospect to follow next season.

|
It's not like the ECAC is a weakling Conference. 2 of the last 5 national champions came from the ECAC and 2 of the last 5 runners-up came from the ECAC. Hockey East only has 1 champion and 1 runner-up in the last five years.
Sure, there are some weak teams in ECAC, but that's true of all the Conferences. If ECAC is a weaker conference, it's not by a large margin. Also, that can change from year-to-year as different teams go through their cycles from good to bad and back.
Hockey East wasn't particularly strong as a whole in Leetch's season at BC. BC averaged 6.3 goals per game in Conference games and 4.3 in non-Conference games that season. They took advantage of some weak competition.
Another thing to keep in mind is that because of Harvard's location, when they play non-Conference games, it's often against teams from Hockey East, especially the other Boston schools like BU and BC. So, that increases their level of difficulty over the other ECAC teams.
Last season, Harvard played BC once (1 win, Fox with 2 points) and BU twice (1 win, 1 loss, Fox with 2 points).
This upcoming season should be a good challenge for Harvard. Their non-Conference opponents are Minnesota (2 games), BC, BU, UMass-Lowell, and Vermont. They open the Beanpot against BU and could play BC again in the second round of the Beanpot. Most of those teams are consistently strong year after year. Vermont is the only one that is usually weaker, but last season, they did pretty well.

Yep who wants someone who was a major force in carrying the Flames playing 27+ minutes a game into the playoffs and actually winning a playoff series in 2015 for the first time since 2004.
for a 20 game stretch at the end of 2015 in games that were playoff-like important- the 31 year old Wideman and Russell were the best Flame defensive pairing perhaps in the history of the Flames.
very short and selective memories by various posters here.

I would actually compare him closer to Brian Rafalski, than Phil Housley. He will be a low goal, high assist defender. But something around both of those players would be amazing.
