Flames don't accept a 2nd and cap dump. If that's all you're getting you let Hanifin lose the 8 year contract. Simple.

If Markstrom is mad at the Flames, why would he block a trade? To make himself miserable for two more years?

Would you rather have the second or the cap space is the question

So your operating theory is that Markstrom will play on a rebuilding team and forgo any real opportunity to win the Cup until he is 36 to stick it to the Flames because he is mad?

I think so too
Who is in the market for a rental, has the cap space and the first?

50% retained his cap hit is only 2.45m. Any team can dump 2.5 m to get him for a cup run for a first.

The Flames also don't have to move him to a team that he chooses

Yeah worst case should be a 1st and B prospect which would be his value as a pure rental.
And I think any of Vegas, Detroit, Colorado, New Jersey, Winnipeg, or Carolina would probably be willing to pay that.
If none of the teams he will re-sign with (Florida, Tampa, or Boston) want to pay for the price to guarantee him and an 8 year deal then you just deal him as a rental.
He can try to block it but no way all those teams are on his 8 team NTC

Hanifin with 50% retained has a cap hit of $2,475,000.
Teams currently in playoff positions with that much cap space (including LTIR space): Carolina, Detroit, Florida, Nashville, NY Rangers, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, Vegas, Winnipeg.
The majority of those teams have their own 1st-round pick in 2024. Should be plenty of possibilities.
