If we're talking Lord of the Rings style directors cut then awesome! If it's an extra 10 minutes then pass.

If it's another 10 minutes I'd pay to see it. If it was LotR DC I'd see it too.

while i would probably go to see it, i doubt they could top Avatar's numbers. it's at 2.7 billion dollars total gross worldwide, whereas The Avengers is currently at 1.3. they would have to more than double Avenger's total gross to take the top spot, and i don't see a director's cut doing that

Rumors was that there was about 35 more minutes of movie that Whedon would have liked to keep in the movie but that he had to cut.

35 minutes of plot, or action?
I feel if they added another 35 minutes to The Avengers it could drag on. I trust Whedon enough to know that it won't be fluff, but I didn't think it was missing out too much with 35 minutes less.

i bet there's stuff in the cut scenes detailing more about how Banner can control turning into the Hulk, since that was only really implied in the theatrical release. also a bit more on how Thor was able to get back to Earth would be nice to see also

Thor was able to get back to Earth because Odin used dark matter to get him there. The Hulk being able to control his powers would be a nice addition.

The Avengers is closer to 1.4 billion now, not including the last 2 weekends of foreign take:

It continues to earn money and will probably take another few hundred million. But yes, you're right I don't see the same rewatch value that Avatar had. I doubt Avengers beats Titanic's 2.2 billion, even with a rerelease.

I don't like the idea of double dipping in theaters with extra material in a single release year. Double dipping is bad enough on the home front (though it seems to have abided in recent years).

I dozed off twice during this film, thankfully I was awoken by explosions.....mark me down as indifferent about the movie.

From what I heard about the cuts, a lot of it was about Captain America adjusting to the 70 year time difference, including tracking down Peggy or whatever happened to her.
Even though Cap isn't my fave, I think it could be really cool and can definitely see myself going back for it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Been awhile since I had that much fun at a movie. That said, I thought Avatar was pretty good until I tried to watch it again.
Re-watchability is often a good indicator.
As well I know nothing of the stories or comics. I randomly watched the prior movies with a tiny bit of knowledge that they all might be coming together or something.

I wonder if they will end one of the other movies (Thor 2, Cap 2, IM 3) as a lead in to the new Avengers film.
Say at the end of Thor 2, Thor may be getting his lunch handed to him by Thanos who is on the verge of acquiring the Cosmic Cube, and the movie then ends with Fury saying "Avengers Assemble".

Do we really need a film of Thanos beating the snot out of Thor for like an hour and a half?

Thanos has already been confirmed not to be the Villain in Thor 2. I agree with the decision as Thor would get his ass handed to him.
And yes SuperMatt18 I have no doubts that the last film before The Avengers 2 will have a tie in, just all the other movies have had. Maybe not to the degree you mentioned, it will be another teaser after the credits. No way does Marvel leave us with a huge cliffhanger in the actual movie.

Loki is already confirmed as back again for Thor 2, so he'll probably have another role, and a large part of the movie will continue to be Asgardian politics.
This guy is set to play the villain in Thor 2:
