Moral high ground to remain closer to the mushy middle. Sounds about right.
There is still enough vet talent left on the Flames to avoid the tear it down to the studs rebuild In Huberdeau, Kadri, and Weegar.

Yup this whole flames management mind set is going on 20 years with zero results.
But let's stick with it as we are smarter than all these other teams who build by drafting high and winning cups.

I'm going to double down on my guess. The Flames are going to retain some of Hertel's money for a 2nd.

I can live with this. They traded the UFAs, stocked up the future. No need to tank this season for a slightly better pick. If they go on a miracle run, great. Unlikely but let's enjoy it if they do.
If not, the future looks way brighter than it did before.

Flames were never going to out tank Columbus, Chicago, San Jose, Anaheim and Arizona. If you believe in Top 5 Picks are the only way.

Exactly. So might as well ice a competitive team and see what happens while keeping an eye toward the future.

Why wasn’t he signed before the deadline ? Because he's only played 15 games and they want to see more. But the fact he isn't moved says they intend to sign him.
Are they even talking? I bet they talked before he came back. In the last couple weeks? Probably not because Conroy has been pretty busy.
What is he worth based on recent play and our knowledge on his past performance? About the same level of salary and term.
Any risk of alienating him by ignoring his contract (Toffoli). No. He owes the Flames and should be very appreciative of how they handled him.

So, now we wait for the "Conroy is done for the day" tweet... or a last minute trade.

Makes sense. You think someone would leak out they were done by now if they didn't have anything on the go.

Which is what they have done and said they would do. Get younger, build character and a new culture in your organization.
A new building is on the horizon and I said long ago that's the target not Draft 2024.

Totally on board with what you’re saying, in the boat with you, but the one thing the Flames have is a culture of commitment, and if they lose that, well things could get far worse. Management is in a tough spot, but I think the current players have earned the right to be allowed to compete intact for the rest of the season. Does that mean they likely miss out on a shot at a high end pick? Likely, but if they send a message that the current players that that efforts aren’t important that could do damage that can’t be replaced with a few bodies (see Edmonton).
As a fan i appreciate the change in philosophy to one that acquires future assets instead of spending them. It’s a start and that is something.

Gotta say, Conroy did very well after seeing all the other trades.
