well, it's tougher for us to take points from SJ now, but they will be weakening the records of all our other division rivals at the same time, so the net result might not be too bad. it will be especially fun watching McCrossover try to split that D and either get pickpocketed by Karlsson or splattered by Burns.

The failure to move Ryan's contract is a big miss here.
As far as the return goes, who else was in the running with cap space to consider resigning?
There might not have been very many teams who could make an offer.

What if... Karlsson signs with an Eastern team and it's the Sens? Do they get that conditional pick?

Firebot, I don't think the Sens got full value, but this is more than spare parts and will still hurt if the Sharks go nowhere and Karlsson walks.
I would also be very surprised if SJ traded Karlsson during the season, unless the wheels completely fell off. They are win-now.

I welcome this trade. Karlsson is not the player he once was. I think this is a diminishing return for San Jose. Chew up as much cap space for the Sharks as possible, and its a better thing for the rest of the division.

At this rate, Tampa Bay will probably get 60 wins this year.

No.
The conditional 1st only transfers if Karlsson appears on another team's reserve list during the 18/19 season.
It doesn't count if Karlsson signs as an UFA with a Eastern conference team after July 1st.

According to the fourth period, Karlsson wasn't willing to agree to a contract extension with any team prior to a trade which probably diminished the return.
If he agreed to an extension before the trade, they could have probably leveraged better players/prospects out of the trade.

Wasn't Demelo not qualified in the Summer and became a UFA, only to sign back with the Sharks for less money?
Norris, Balcers and the picks are lotto tickets, which are ok.
It's bad, but it's not Feaster bad. Man, when you look back at the return for Iginla, it really pisses me off.
Kenny fricken Agostino and I don't even remember the other. At least Norris was a recent 1st rounder and Balcers is a productive first year pro.

How dare you disrespect the legend himself, Ben Hanowski.
And also, remember how important all that cap space was that never got used?

I don't see it quite as bad as others. Karlsson is on an expiring contract. If (for whatever reason) he doesn't re-sign there, it's a huge loss for SJ.
If that appears to be the situation in Mar, SJ can't even trade him to the East, or they lose another 1st rounder.
This (of course) assumes he's not impacted in any way by his offseason surgery.
SJ had OTT over a barrel already (not dissimilar to Iginla deal), but there is some risk here.

It would be fun if William Karlsson went to San Jose. All your Karlssons are belong to us.

Feaster was limited to dealing with four teams, reduced to two at the last hour. And Iginla was a 35-year-old playoff rental. If the Flames wanted a decent return for Iginla, King should have let Sutter trade him a couple years earlier.

Huge miss? The Ryan contract is meaningless to a team with no ambition or intention to spend anywhere near the cap for the foreseeable future. The failure to at least return Hertl or Mier is the huge miss. As a fan there's not much to cheer for, especially when Duchene and Stone walk away after this debacle.
On the other side, I look forward to seeing more of Karlsson now that he's in the Pacific. Even though this will likely come at the expense of a few points for the Flames.

Yeah, diminishing return for San Jose...just a 28 year old, two time norris winning defenseman in his prime with 215 points in his last 230 games.
Credit Wilson for going all in. They won't miss the pieces they traded.

Very likely Kalrsson re-signs in San Jose, definitely don't think this is a rental situation.
With Doughty and Ekman-Larson both re-signing with their respective teams, and tavares signing and leaving money on the table this year with Toronto, I think the free agent market is essentially set for next year in terms of prices.
Why risk 80-90 million?
Nice trade for Wilson.
