Daniel Fleetwood, who was diagnosed in July with a rare form of cancer called spindle cell sarcoma, was told he had two months to live. In order to grant Fleetwood his dying wish, a Twitter campaign dubbed #ForceforDaniel was created.
Thanks to support from actors Mark Hamill and John Boyega, the campaign grabbed the attention of director J.J. Abrams, who reached out to Fleetwood and had an unedited version of the film screened for him at this home.

suddenly in context that funky lightsabre looks cool.
I really took notice of the way it is 'unsheathed' in this trailer, it almost has like a raw savage aspect to it. It also appears to be all one source, there are not just vents out of the side that would be lobbed off in a fight, but the whole beam is one piece. Pause it at 49 seconds. Also if you pause it again at 1:23 (or the main image for the video) it appears to be flat or to have edges like an actual broad sword. Perhaps this is a nod or a hint to him being a Knight?... of the old Republic?

i was thinking about that last night and on the ride home from practice, not about the sword itself, but about the whole Knights of Ren thing that Kylo is part of our leading. it seems to me that they hold a high position within the first order, and they're recovering Vader artifacts. What if they're an off shoot of the old Imperial Guard that we saw in ROTJ. those guys were supposed to be the elite of the elite within the old Empire, and the question was always around if these guys were force sensitive or not.

I think they're so he can stab people in the face with the cross-guard while they're least expecting it. Less defensive and more offensive like when a Knight slams the grip or pommel into his opponent while they're off balance.
