Most likely you see a player like Nyquist from CBJ coming in for a fifth or sixth round pick.
They will put him on the top line left side and see if they have enough depth to be competitive.
If the season goes sideways or he is not enough of an impact player than they can move him at the deadline for more than the acquisition cost.

If you could get a package from the Blues for Tkachuk for Tarasenko, Neighbors, and 2023 first round pick than thats what the Flames should do.
If you bring in Nyquist for a late pick from CBJ and JVR from the Flyers for a late pick than if the team is not highly competitive at the trade deadline you can move out Tarasenko, Nyquist, and JVR at 50% retained along with Toffoli and Tanev and end up with possibly five more first round picks in 2013.
Gives the team a shot at competing for Sutters last year and gives a foundation for a rebuild/retool after the season. Granted they will be top third draft picks, but they all have value.

I don’t disagree, but unfortunately the Flames have too many good pieces locked up (including Sutter behind the bench) to keep them from being in the bottom half of the league.

If the management showed some foresight and planning for once, they can (including from now!) move those good pieces for good returns and time their build proactively.

Treliving has already been collecting 2013 first rounders. Might be wise to start looking toward 2023?

I'd say that team is a step up from last year. Our bottom 6 sucked and that is a significant improvement.

No worries man, the typo made me laugh, only because Treliving has loved that 2013 draft class!

It’s hard to trade guys at the deadline that have multiple years on their deals though. Teams just don’t have the cap to accommodate.

True, but there are workarounds esp if executed as part of planned rebuilding years - taking bad contracts back, retaining (I realize the org has never done this). Building a championship team is hard, but continuing to make easy choices means continuing to follow the reactive path this org has been on for some time.

I see some rumblings Kadri could be returning to the Avs. I think they will need to trade Sam Girard to make the cap work 3.9M left to work with

I’m so sick of hearing this.
Why the hell would we trade Tkachuk for an old winger a late 1st and a middling prospect?

Because it's better than losing him for nothing?

Kickstart a rebuild. The top 2 players this team has/had have been linked to going home. Time to build a new core.

Scoring Winger
|
I read some of these posts and don't understand. This team is not finishing last overall or close to that without Gaudreau on the roster. I am curiously optimistic that the Flames could surprise many people without Gaudreau. This year had more to do with Sutter than a star player elevating the rest of the team.
Worse teams just looking at the standings from last year include: Arizona, Buffalo, Chicago, Seattle, Montreal, Anaheim, San Jose, Philadelphia, Seattle ... That is nearly the top ten picks right there. If the Flames were to tank for the 2023 draft they needed to start last year while they were winning the division.
There is also no cap room on most teams available to sell off every player on the roster, unless you think the Flames should take on every bad contract in the league - and why would teams just give away players whose bad contracts expire. They very likely won't be at 111 points or division winner but the same roster is fighting for a division playoff spot or wild card spot at the least, in my opinion.
