Fuel efficiency is different than carbon emissions. Jet fuel creates a bit more CO2 per L than gas. There's also the issue of other emissions from jets that contribute to increased greenhouse effect. Even water vapour adds to it.

In Europe they can easily fill a plane with passengers and get multiple trips out per day between destinations. In Canada, maybe you'd flying with a partial plane load, and can eek out maybe a couple of flights between destinations. That's probably why we're never going getting those kinds of cheap flights.

If you can fit 169 passengers on a Max 8 for 20 Euro a head and do that flight between Dublin and London pretty frequently. It's a 1hr+ flight, so maybe 15 back and forth flights?

So back of the napkin math not taking into account maintenance dead time.

20 Euros*169 seats * 15 flights = 51000 Euros per day, not including people paying for bags.

An equivalent Canadian flight from Sydney to Montreal? What's the demand there? There's little chance that you could fill a plane, even at a low cost, to do a huge number of flights back and forth every day and make a profit.

A popular route, like Calgary to Vancouver is a good example of a route the can be relatively cheap for passengers and profitable for the airline at ~$65 to $150 one way. I don't see how you do that for a route that is only occasionally popular.

The comparison makes me think of that ridiculous meme of China vs. Canada high speed rail development.

Worth noting that Ryanair is cramming 197 seats into the Max, and 189 into the 800s. So an extra $6K+ a day

Preach!

The sooner the sweatpant-wearing, nose picking, toenail-clipping, too-cheap-for-checked-bags-so-must-hog-the-carry-on-comparment brigade (i.e. Edmontonians) is priced out of air travel, the better!

For the environment, of course...

Does anyone know if there was a reason that traffic was crazy getting to the stampede grounds this afternoon? We usually give ourselves an extra 15-20 minutes when going to events, but today was crazy. Mcleod trail was backed up from people trying to turn into grounds at 25th avenue. Monster Jam is just that popular???

There was also some big Zwilling kitchen warehouse sale at the Big 4 which my wife wanted to go to. We got down to the grounds ok, but when we saw the line just to get in was stretched around the entire building + some we decided we didn't need cheap kitchen gadgets that badly

Ah, that makes sense. Monster Jam was pack, but I can’t imagine it was more than 10K people and I’ve never seen parking backed up like that. We parked by the casino and it was very quiet on that side of the grounds.

Do we want to save the world from Climate Change? 'Cuz I know where to probably start.

And the Aviation industry is not far behind. No bitching about cars or heating oil, but push comes to shove? Luxuries ought to be the first one to go.

But guess who enjoy luxuries?

Yeah and when you pass a cyclist on a road coming up to a stop sign, of course they just whiz on through the intersection without stopping and now you have to pass them again.

I mean I get why they do it and I'm fine with it in general, but near my place it seems like the same 6-10 bike riders down the same long community street every day.

You always have to pass 2-3 of them on any given day, and it's an exercise in futility for everyone to get around safely, then we hit two stops signs along the way, they go straight through and everyone starts the process of going around them again.

Right. Good point.

So if I understand what you're putting down you are suggesting a strategy involving a U-Boat and some torpedoes?

They'll never see it coming.

NOBODY expects their Cruise Ship to be torpedoed in open water by an antique U-Boat! Its brilliant!

Hit them right at Dinner Service so they can't escape!

Try and save the crew though. They're generally nice people.

I think I've identified your problem, I love getting passed by a vehicle within 75 meters of a stop sign when I'm doing 30 and they're doing 60 only to have them slam on their brakes and act like I'm the ahole

What’s the point of calls I answer but get an immediate hang up?

I answer these because I do get legit calls from unknown numbers.

Testing system to see if a number gets answered. You pick up, you get verified as a good number on the list. Then you get a call from Microsoft that your security settings need updating and Dave will help you install stuff.
