Well thats a little different. Yeah, in Europe you can do short-hops. London to Glasgow or England to Holland or whatever.

You pay little, you get less and your trip sucks. But...its like an hour maybe...so you suck it up.

So in that instance distance makes a difference, but its also DIRT cheap. I'm not expecting a $14 trip to Toronto or anything, but the current costs are outrageous.

Don’t pretend flying in Canada today is expensive because there’s a region of the world where it’s even cheaper. If you like to travel long distances, you won the lottery by being a Canadian in 2024.

Is there anything more annoying than trotting out the same tired old argument about “back in my day” to try and shut down people complaining about factual price discrepancies in our air travel?

No one cares how things were back in your day. They’re talking about the situation now. Air travel is extremely expensive in Canada relative to many places in the world right now. Are there some legitimate reasons like the size of our country? Sure. But it’s still cheaper to fly to many US and international destinations than domestic ones that are closer.

Using the whole “you're spoiled compared to people of previous generations” is the worst kind of cop out that doesn’t in any way address the issue of inflated prices. I mean at least put some effort in and blame it on the fact that it’s due to a lack of competition or fuel or our protectionist airline industry.

You know, back in my day people listened and cared when someone told us how things were back in their day.

Could be worse. People could start saying “You don’t have the right to cheap airfare.”

People like me. Flying should not be cheap. It will be one of the hardest industries to de-carbonize and should be limited until it is. An overseas flight produces as much CO2 as the average car does in a year. Tax that ####.

Exactly!

We do get cheap airlines in Canada, the same type you can use in Europe, except people here then go up in arms about having to pay for extras and swear to never use them

The last time I went to Vancouver the flight was cheaper than the uber to the airport

Are you familiar with the concept of 'Sunk Costs?'

Them Cruise ships ain't cheap. They have an established 'lifetime of use' that has to be fulfilled or they're not paid for.

But Cruise ships and commercial ships...these things burn a form of Diesel that is so unrefined its almost Tar.

Do we want to save the world from Climate Change? 'Cuz I know where to probably start.

And the Aviation industry is not far behind. No bitching about cars or heating oil, but push comes to shove? Luxuries ought to be the first one to go.

But guess who enjoy luxuries?

The cruise industry is making progress just like every other industry with new ships switching to natural gas and ports upgrading their shore power facilities so that ships can plug into clean power. There is even an EV ship that is being developed and should go into operation later this decade.

Canada will never have flights as cheap as Europe.

Spoiler!

A better comparable for Canada is Australia, where flights aren’t any cheaper than here.

And Europe won’t enjoy incredibly cheap air travel for much longer. Subsidies are drying up as the backlash against over-tourism gains force, and exemptions on aviation fuel taxes will be ditched.

Spoiler!

Passenger jets have a fuel economy in the range of 2.3-2.5 l/100km per passenger. Not much more and in some cases better than your average vehicle on the road.

If those numbers are try that is significantly better than most cars on the road. My hybrid does 5L/100km on the highway so on a solo trip the airplane is twice as fuel efficient. When I load up the family hauler it is 11 to 12L so for four people the airplane is still more fuel efficient. That is impressive.
