34 goals, 34 assists (68pts) in 34 games in his junior year. Pretty similar
Gaudreau's production is far more impressive than Mullen's. He was 3rd in the ECAC in scoring that year, and nowhere close to first. Having said that, if Gaudreau ends up as good as Joey Mullen, that would be a terrific result

With 69 points, Johnny is now tied for 3rd when it comes to points in a single NCAA season in the last ten years ... and the two guys ahead of him, who were both seniors, played 39 and 40 games respectively, while Johnny now has played 36.

Outside of nationality and being from the northeastern US, they aren't comparable at all. Did you ever see Mullen play??? Completely different style.

I'm 28, so my memory of Mullen is mostly from pictures and the newspaper and hockey cards. I couldn't tell you at all how he played. I saw the 5'10 stature, BC college career and 50 goal Flames season and thought "I wonder..."

IMO the best modern comparables would be former BC players Cam Atkinson and Nathan Gerbe.

CAM ATKINSON (5-8 and 174)
Freshman 7-12-19 in 36
Sophomore 30-23-53 in 42
Junior 31-21-52 in 39

NATHAN GERBE (5-5 and 178)
Freshman 11-7-18 in 39
Sophomore 25-22-47 in 41
Junior 35-33-68 in 43

Johnny outscored them heavily in his freshman season but it's fairly close in sophomore (Atkinson) and junior (Gerbe) seasons.

Huselius was actually very strong and well conditioned.

After living in Boston for 3 years, finally went to see a BC game. The Gaudreau-Arnold-Hayes line was very dominant. Gaudreau especially had chance after chance.

In the offense and neutral zone he seemed to sort of coast along, and had a knack for appearing where the puck would come next. But what I found most impressive was his ability to control the play once he had the puck. He seemed at a whole another level when it came to his ability to move around with the puck on his stick through traffic and draw defenders to him before distributing for a great scoring chance. In addition to his 4 points, he had about three or four other highlight-reel plays; the Notre Dame goalie was really good tonight.

Also, the atmosphere at the game was really neat, with its strange, ritualistic college chants and lack of beer. Wish I would have started going to these games sooner, as I am sure this is the last year of college for Gaudreau! He IS that much better than everyone on the ice!

That explains it. Mullen wasn't the best skater in the league but had a great release and nose for the net. He was tough little SOB who could take the abuse of playing in around the net. Joey Mullen was one of my favorite Flames and he was a treat to watch, but Gaudreau won't play the game like Mullen. Gaudreau will hopefully taste as much success as Mullen in a Flames uniform.

Gaudreau on tying Karyia's record:

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/new..._kariya_as.php

Quote:
"I didn't even know that until you told me," he said of the record. "It's pretty easy to do that when you're playing with Bill Arnold and Kevin Hayes. I'm pretty thankful coach put us together toward the middle of the season. Playing with those two guys, my game just gets better and better."

By now, there isn't a soul in any college hockey rink or on any message board that isn't aware of Gaudreau's brilliance. The Little Engine That Always Does leads the nation in every meaningful offensive category and drives a BC offense that gives opponents nightmares.
Quote:
The pressure that comes with his greatness is welcomed. And, as he said, he took the challenge heading into Saturday's game personally. It's tough to put up the numbers he does and remain oblivious to the status that comes with it. He wants to be mentioned along with Brian Gionta and Nathan Gerbe. He wants to be the best even if he publicly won't acknowledge anything but his teammates' hard work and the joy of winning.

"Whether I'm the leading scorer or not, it's a do or die game," he said. "I need to come out and make sure I'm at my best and help my teammates do everything we can to get a win."

Tie-breaker to get into the semi finals goes today at 4:30ET. The BC pbp/color guys are great, even if it's just their sweet dialects. Tune in, folks!

Was hoping ND would be streaming it, they usually stream their games, but it's just audio on their site. Still better than nothing if you want to listen:
