BSG conversion with Freespace 2 engine. Sad that we are dealing with an engine that is like 12 years old. What the hell has happened to PC gaming and this genre?
Check out the X series, it is pretty darn good. I would like it a lot more if it had some more "ease of use" quality of life things, but all in all, it is a pretty cool space sim.
This was one of my favorite games of all time. (X Wing vs. Tie Fighter) - probably one of the top combat flight sims. Haven't picked it up in years, not sure how it has aged.
Tie Fighter was (and probably still is) the single greatest space sim game of all time.
And it aged terribly. I bet a refresh of the game with nothing more then a graphics/sound upgrade would sell like crazy. Especially if it went for $25 or so.
But I'm sure Lucas would want to toss some stupid kid and a gungan or one of those lame teardrop fighters in - which would ruin the whole thing.
I doubt you will find anyone that says FF7 has not aged well.
FF7 is horrible. The graphics were terrible even back when it was released (sprites > low poly 3D).
I recently bought it on my PS3 ($10 btw) and spent 2 hours playing it before I grew tired at the terrible gameplay and the incredibly blocky graphics. Also forgot how awful the storyline is too - 40+ hours of angsty overdramatic teenagers fighting against... corporations. Ok then...
It was appealing when I was 15, not anymore. Therefore, FF7 has aged terribly.

TIE Fighter was the king of that series. Totally agree.

You are one of the very VERY few who do not enjoy the game then. Except you saying it has not aged well is moot since you apparently didn't like it from the getgo.

I loved the game when I was 15/16. I hated it last year. So to me, the game aged poorly.
But I do get why you love the game. Personally if anyone said anything bad about FF3 (6), I would reach through my monitor and punch them in the crotch

This thread has got me wanting to play some old DOS games.... but I can't seem to get DOSbox working properly. Either the games freeze up, or won't play at all... and generally the gamepad I had won't work with the game.... Is it just me or is DOSbox just unreliable?
Read the help. I had problems at first because everything froze up or was slow. Could just be some settings.

Far too easy to make uber characters. Just level with Bahamut or Crusader to increase HP and MPs at level ups and fight TRex over and over.
Still a fun game, but went downhill in the World of Ruin.
Actually you go to the desert and fight Caltrops over and over again. Give you 10k exp and have 6 HPs (hard to hit). But Trex works too. Just takes a while.
I equipped the +2 magic power per level esper on Edgar... lol @ Ultima 9999 on 8 enemies at the same time.
Then of course the Gengi glove (whatever the 2 weaps at the same time one was + 4 attacks per = 8 attacks per turn) / Atma Weapon / Fixed Dice combo on Setzer = epic.

I agree there was something about strapping into a tie fighter with no shields and getting on the tail of a hated x-wing.
With the expansion packs there was an amazing amount of content and missions.
The best mission was the one where you flew on the wing of Darth Vader himself and watch him rip through enemy fighters like a knife through butter.
X-wing Alliance was a very cool game, especially when you finally got to fly the Falcon on the Death Star Mission from Jedi. Weaving through the death star, targeting the power regulator, then flying at break next speed out of the death star was amazing and tough.
The only problem with tie fighter though was that there were too many missions in the gun ships which were certainly not tie fighters.

Misunderstood you, so yes. You are then also one of the few who do not revere it as an ageless classic =|

Truth be told, if someone picked up FF7 today, I would not be shocked if they did not enjoy it. It is much slower paced than the Final Fantasy on train tracks that they have now since you can get lost on advancing the plot. (Where the hell is the Crater!?)

I don't understand why people build and level up. I always appreciated that other than FF1 you never had to level up to finish the game. With a reasonable strategy you can play right through and follow the plot along. I always lost interest in games where you had to build for hours before advancing the plot.
I can;t remember what series it was but there have been a few games where enemies have gotten stronger with you. So if you level up they also level up so leveling up doesn't make the game any easier.
I only recently finished FF7. I never did have a playstation. I was a little disppointed with the plot. It didn't seem to resonate with me and the whole Am I a clone thing didn't work for me. I much perferred 2/5, 3/6 and 8. Though I played 2 and 3 when I was younger I played 8 shortly after 7.

You could guarantee hit Cactrot by using Edgar's Drill. More often then not you would bump into the Sand Worm like creatures in that area instead of them though.
Cactrots offered zero experience, but 10,000 gold and 10 MAGIC POINTS.
Tyranosaur's offered 8800 XP and could be easily killed with an Economizer and the XMagic Relic. Vanish + Doom.
Genji Glove + Offering was rididuclous. Atma Weapons doing 9999 damage was silly. On the Kefka battle, you could steal another Atma Weapon from one of the fights on the way to Kefka. You could one hit Kefka by casting Quick and 4x2 Atma Weaponing him twice.
It didn't seem to resonate with me and the whole Am I a clone thing didn't work for me..
The plot becomes a lot stronger with all the backstory they've released. Did you get the hidden scene accessed by visiting the ShinRa Mansion after Cloud returns to normal?
That also gives you more back story which adds depth.
I used to love California Games on my Atari back in the day...now not so much. I'll go back to a classic like Pacman, Space Invaders, Asteroid, Missile Command, not this one unfortunately.
