It's in my top three strategy games of all time. I would love to see a new version with updated graphics.
Same with Master of Orion.
Master of Orion, Master of Magic and X-COM would be up there.
Unfortunately with what they did with Master of Orion 3 (ugh), I don't know if I want to see a new version of Master of Magic

This thread has got me wanting to play some old DOS games.... but I can't seem to get DOSbox working properly. Either the games freeze up, or won't play at all... and generally the gamepad I had won't work with the game.... Is it just me or is DOSbox just unreliable?

I've had virtually no problems. I had an issue with Police Quest 1 VGA remake and Space Quest 5 freezing up at a certain point. Found another copy and worked fine. Could be the versions of the games you have.
I find some of the really old RPGs like Wizardry and Bard's Tale don't hold up that well (I loved them back when they came out) - I could live with the 1980's graphics but the endless stream of random monsters while walking down the street wears thin after a while.
X-Com (the original) does hold up pretty well, despite dated graphics and a few annoying bits (like having to re-equip your soldiers every mission).
Theme Hospital was amazing, I wonder how that has aged.
Theme Hospital still works and looks great. The midi music is perfect as it sounds exactly like elevator/hospital music. The graphics are faux 3D and it looks very good. I still have it installed.
If I were to ask for one series to be re-booted, this one would be it.
You'd love descent freespace 2, that game has such an amazing storyline. It became open sourced a little while ago and with lots of the community updates it has graphics approaching modern and its free! It is the pinnacle of space sims, though, it isn't wing commander.
Freespace 2 is definitely my favorite "flying" game, or whatever you want to term it. Great story, great gameplay, great graphics (obviously not as great today, but they held up well.) GOG sells it for like $10 I think and it will run on modern machines.

BSG conversion with Freespace 2 engine. Sad that we are dealing with an engine that is like 12 years old. What the hell has happened to PC gaming and this genre?
FF7's always been a favourite, although I think one reason it's perceived to have not aged well is because Advent Children updated the look too much.
Also Cloud looks too much like a girl in AC.
I find early 3D games to not age well at all. Some of the older 3D Playstation 1 and N64 games feel almost unplayable now because of how bad the camera work is or how blocky they look.
2D sprites, on the other hand, still rock to this day. My personal opinion is, nothing looks as good as a well done game in 2D sprites or cell shaded. It just such a vibrant look to it.
