Yeah, I'm not really sure about her being a maverick.
Simply being dumb and stating controversial views doesn't make someone a revolutionary...
I think this is all rooted in the assumption that you have to be particulary intelligent or smart to make your way to where she is now. Really, looking at her career, seems like a bunch of luck and accidents glued together to me.
I remember in high school there was this crazy conspiracy theorist guy who claimed that he had a vision from God that a woman would be in a position of huge power in the US and would mess up so badly that the whole country would be in ruins. I, of course, thought he was completely insane and probably sexist. Who knows, he might be right?
I wish Sarah Palin was done with, but I never underestimate contemporary American conservatism's love of the irrational and their capacity for anti-intellectualism. Have you seen the videos of the sort of people who go to Palin book signings? They all seem really dumb, right?
I wish that were entirely the case. The reality is that there are LOADS of people in various areas of the States who do well in school, know a great deal about a great number of subjects, and can communicate intelligently in most ways. These people also happen to like Palin, Glenn Beck, FoxNews,, etc. etc. I don't know how that's possible, but apparently it is.

I totally agree....wait a second though. Weren't you all prepared to vote for her and campaigned strongly against Obama just a short time ago?
When she was initially picked it seemed like a good choice. Then her stupidity became really apparent and I realized what kind of mistake it was to pick her as the VP candidate, and how stupid she was.
Apparently I had the same response that many Americans had as well, including a lot of women.
I haven't liked Obama from the start and I still don't like him. But that has nothing to do with Palin.

Same reason they believe in "the invisible man who lives in the sky." It's easier to avoid responsibility and go with "faith" instead of critical thinking. Especially when you have your leaders telling you all your problems are someone else's fault (the evil liberals).
If Palin looked like Susan Boyle, none of you would have ever heard of her. She wasn't picked for her brains, or her political savvy. She was picked because she's "folksy." Just like George W., and a little easier on the eyes. She appeals to W's base who want to vote "for a guy who's just like me!"
Dumb? You betcha. The fact she's capitalized on her fame (or at least her handlers have) doesn't change the fact she's about as stupid as they come. Lots of talentless dummies are rich. Check out the music industry as a start.
Palin is as much a manufactured product as Ashlee Simpson. And about as bright.

wow there's certainly a lot of paintbrushing in this thread.
My beliefs have nothing to do with faith. I've also seen an equal number of Liberal's who live in a world where they have 0 common sense and 0 intellectual prowness.
The fact that people are creating such wide perceptions based on political support is kinda silly.
I was fairly liberal a long time ago. Even joined the party a long time ago. But as my perception of the world changed, I became more a middle conservative, and basically I'd put my brain power up against anyone here.
Being Liberal or Conservative has nothing to do with how smart you are, it has to do with your later created value system and your perception.

Sure, you're going to have a full spectrum of supporters for both parties in the US.
But when a substantial proportion of an otherwise progressive and well developed nation believes in what basically amounts to a fantasy (religion), one has a potential explanation as to why they support someone so clearly unqualified to be president.
They share values.
And political parties cultivate those values - see W's evangelical support, and the Republican party's hammering on the so called "elites". For the moment, they are all about religious conservatism, and propagating the idea that if you're educated, you shouldn't be in charge. The whole "I'd rather have the first 100 people in the phonebook running the country rather than the top 100 Univeristy profs".
Basically two groups (currently) support the Republicans. The owners of the Walmart, and the employees of the Walmart. The extraordinarily wealthy want a free market unencumbered by government restrictions. The employees want the lowest common denominator stuff - religion, redirection of popular discontent (illegals), and "get the government out of your pocket!" agenda.
A large part of this country honestly doesn't believe in evolution. Mostly because they don't WANT to as it would cause them to question their religious beliefs. We can frame that as a value if we want... I tend to call it stupid.
(I'm not clear on where they are at with regard to antibiotic resistant bacteria BTW).

Wait, so not only you insinuate that the liberals are critical thinkers (or at very least, more critical than the conservatives) but you go as far as to say that their leaders don't tell them that all their problems are someone else's fault (evil corporations)?

As I said - both parties have a full spectrum of supporters.
That said, I don't think you can quantify "liberals" into a concise group as you can the base supporters of Palin. Let's be honest, at the conclusion of the Bush presidency 21% of America thought things were going just awesome. These are by and large the same core supporters for Palin - and you're never going to reach them by using facts.
Now, if it turned out there was some girl on girl action in Palin's past, they would probably desert her in droves. And then Youtube it. Because that's the kind of people they are.

Pretty much sums up 80% of the population, which includes both sides of the political spectrum.
The biggest issue I have with the Republicans, besides some of their social policy, is the whole villify the elite movement. Not being a moron has become un-American in the eyes of a lot of people. The funny part is that a lot of the far right will talk about being strong and independent people and not needing government help etc., but this whole 'agrandizing of the stupid' movement is just a way to play to the insecurities of the 4 brain cell community.
I almost guarantee you could have made the same video of Obama supporters in 2008. I'm not too interested in American politics, but my wife was so gaga about Obama. So I called her out on it. What was it that she liked about his policies? All I got were vague references to change and hope.

Obviously, but that doesn't make the video any less funny.

That's true, and probably true for a lot of politicians.
The difference is that if you asked Palin what her policies are, she wouldn't be able to answer either.
Hell, it wasn't long ago that she had to write 'em on her hand.
Everyone fell in love with Obama's charisma and speechifying ability and the "Hope and Change" stuff, but he did actually have a platform, even if most people didn't know it.
