Is that totally impossible? I don't believe she is behind the scenes cackling while she counts her money and plans her next idiotic public statement as if it's just part of some master-plan.
I think she has some personal charisma to certain people, and some of those people have a certain amount of power that helped her get into the lime-light, and now she's a train wreck and people don't want to stop watching -- yet.

I don't I respect what Cow stated.
This is a woman that managed to become a governor by being smart enough to plug into what the people wanted.
She managed to move into the power circle in the republican party (You can argue that the party was pretty much in shambles, but she managed to get to the candidacy of the role of VP)
She's made a wack of money, and she's turned her life into something appealing enough to make money on the speakers circuit.
While I don't respect her views, and a lot of her positions (With the exception of one of two rrroooaarrrwwww) she's managed to position herself pretty nicely.
Its the same way that I think that Paris Hilton is a pretty saavy chick while playing a role as a bit of a ditz. But I respect the fact that while she's the heiress to a lot of money, she didn't sit on her a$$ and live off of it.
She's made herself a name brand thats probably thought about more then the original Hilton name. She's created a name empire and gets paid a lot of money to show up at events, and she seems to be smart enough to know when to crank up the PR machineand get her name in the news.
There are a lot of times that we tend to label people as dumb, stupid or clueless because of our perceptions of them, and thats your right, but I view that as equally stunted.

I give Paris Hilton far more credit for what she's done than Sarah Palin who has failed at becoming VP and will fail at ever becoming anything important outside of a punch-line.
If you think her ultimate goal was to just be in the news a lot and get paid some money to make bad speeches, than, yes, you could say she is successful; however, that is not what I think her goal was or is.
Is it not as equally silly to label someone as a manipulative genius as it is to label them as dumb-asses? I don't see the difference, only different ends of the spectrum.

If you're the VP candidate for the USA and you don't know that Africa is a continent, you deserve bad press, whether you are right or left. What a stupid card to pull, right out of Faux News probably.

Well Africa only recently gained continent status, so it's easy to see why someone could of made an honest mistake.

Biden has stuck his foot up his ass and then into his mouth a lot of times too.
Where is the uproar?

There is a big difference between saying something stupid and actually being stupid.
Money, fame, clever enough to get there bla bla bla... the woman is still an idiot. She landed her ass in the perfect storm and while it got her a lot of attention, she still came across as looking like a dimwit. How clever is that?
Being a punchline is not successful. Appealing to a bunch of rubes, nuts and cranks doesn't take a shred of intelligence. Parlaying it into a ridiculous book to sell to the rubes, nuts and cranks was a good move. I'll give her that.

Cunning and political savvy are not the same thing as intelligence and reasoning ability. Governor of Alaska, big whoop, the whole state has 2/3 the population of Calgary and she COULDN'T HANDLE THE JOB. She has all the gravitas of Bozo the Clown and the intellect of a Canucks troll.
How anyone can think she is smart entirely baffles me. You could maybe make a case she's of average intelligence but is too lazy to learn anything, but "smart" implies all kinds of basic knowledge about the world that she has been observed to lack.

I was going to say just this.
Neither Pain or Paris are 'intelligent' in the way we think of it. Having savvy, knowing how to suck up and position yourself and having charisma and sex appeal aren't smarts.
Paris was rich before she started, and it's the only reason she got a chance to do any of what she did. Just because she was able to parlay it into a few businesses in which she pretty much had to whore herself out anyway doesn't show any smarts. Just timing, luck, and a willingness to do things and behave in ways other people are not.
Start me off with millions and I could make a business out of partying too.
I'm not familiar with Palin's rise, but I would suspect her success has far more to do with her handlers and strategists than her herself.
She is big in the Republican party because there is still a huge wacko fringe element to it and they think she's the best person to lead them (or at least be the face of the organization).
There is such a thing as success by accident or luck. Just because you are successful does not make you smart or even deserving of that success. As we all know the opposite is also true. There's people born into this world that probably could have taken it by storm, but because of civil wars in their homelands, or being born into poverty, never get the chance.
That's life unfortunately.

I only recently realized that Africa was its own continent as well. What confused me was that I coudn't see it from my front porch.
Apparently, Rod Love has no love for her either:

Yeah, I'm not really sure about her being a maverick.
Simply being dumb and stating controversial views doesn't make someone a revolutionary...
