I don't want to get it, but due to my school/practicum stuff, I have to get it. Oh well, no big deal.

I haven't been sick to the point where it's necessary for me to stay home in nearly 7 years. During that period of time I never have once gotten a flu shot, or taken any form of medication other than cough syrup and some Cold-Fx, why would I change now.

My mother, brother and sister have all come down with the H1N1 and I don't think it's been pretty for any of them. I'll be getting the shot.

Everything I have read here has done nothing to swap my opinion. People saying I am selfish for not getting a flu shot, something I have not done for years, don't really do anything for me either.

My boss had a bad reaction to the shot and ended up in the hospital. I know about 6-7 people who had the shot other than him and 3 werer sick afterwards.

The H1N1 shot? The one that isn't available yet?

How does that work? Pretty contradictory dont you think?

If you got the shot you have nothing to worry about.

I'm not getting the shot and If people are worried about me passing on the H1NI assuming i got it, should get the shot.

The "selfish" arguments come mostly because 1) the flu shot is at best 90% effective in normal, healthy people (for H1N1; for seasonal flu it's lower since they don't always get the strains right); 2) the effectiveness is much lower in seniors and people without a good immune system; and 3) some people can't have the vaccination due to allergies or immune system problems.

On the one hand I don't necessarily subscribe to the approach of telling those who won't get the vaccination they are enemies of society, but if I was a senior or someone who couldn't get the vaccination I'd be hoping most of the people around me had it.

Primary group for the shot is:
-People under 65 with chronic health conditions
-Pregnant women
-Children 6 months to less than 5 years of age
-People living in remote and isolated settings or communities
-Health care workers involved in pandemic response or the delivery of essential health care services
-Household contacts and care providers of persons at high risk who cannot be immunized or may not respond to vaccines
To me I look at the high risk group and say am I going to be around anyone in the High Risk group. If the answer is yes I should get the Flu shot even if there is a small possibility of it being harmful. This means if you ride the C-Train you should get a Shot to protect others regardless of the risk to yourself.

I have been amazed at how powerful the anti-vaccine lobby has gotten. Even with all of the studies showing MMR doesn't lead to Autism people are still afraid of getting childhood vaccines.

Now doing some simple risk analysis. Let's say the flu vaccine guarentees that i won't die (not true) and the risk of some negative outcome from the vaccine is 1 in 100,000 how many people have to die in canada from the flu for it to be worth it to get the vaccine. So if 30 million people /.1million = 300. Since 83 have already died it is quite likely we will exceed this number.

Based on the above illustration you would have to estimate the odds that getting vaccine will kill 1 in 100,000 people for you to choose not to get it. Other wise a risk assessement will lead you to get the vaccine.

I checked with my dad, who is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease.

He said as as many people as possible should get it so the spreading can be curtailed as much as possible. There's about as much of a risk from it as there is with standard seasonal flu vaccines.

It's worth noting that he is quite critical of the healthcare system.

I'd be happy to ask him any further questions people may have.

Where do you get it?

I don't have a regular doctor and can't make an appointment. I also can't go wait for what I assume will be hours at a walk-in clinic with all the other suckers like me who don't have a doctor.

Not getting it. Don't really believe the whole pandemic. If people start dropping like flies I might chance my mind. Will just eat healthy and take care of myself for now.

So both my brother and sister have been confirmed as having H1N1 and man, they are super sick. Both have had high fevers for about a week, vomiting, coughing... it sounds awful.

Lucky for my brother they caught it in time and he's on Tamiflu, so he might come out of it okay.

Get the shot, getting this thing sounds awful.

I just got back from the Rockyview hospital. About half the ICU beds are occupied by people with H1N1 today. We are very early in this process and the number of patients requiring that level of support is going to increase. It is going to change the way that we are able to provide health care in all likelihood for the duration of flu season. Even if only one person in a thousand in Calgary requires ICU support that is 1,000 people.

Each one of those people got H1N1 from someone else. I understand the people who say that it is their choice to get vaccinated and that they are not convinced by the evidence that this decreases their risk of having a harmful outcome ( although I do not believe that). I'll be getting my immunization tomorrow if at all possible.

Each person who has H1N1 is a link in a chain of people. Some people in that chain are going to end up very sick or dead. Why not help break those links by getting vaccinated.
