I wasn’t calling for a full rebuild but the commitment they’ve made so far in getting as many first rounders as they’ve gotten(so far) combined with a new building on the way has me seriously considering getting season tickets again for next season. I had some for about a decade but had to give them up a few years ago.

It’s why it’s dangerous to retain on long contracts.

Utah has a retention slot tied up in OEL until 2030-31.

I get people wanting to retain on Kadri, I just don’t think the value is actually there. Better to take on a shorter contract a team doesn’t like and help with cap space that way than retain for 5 years.

$10M of retention over five years is worth around a late first.

Hertl (with two 3rd rounders and $8.4M/6 retained) got two late firsts. Package Kadri at $5.5 with two thirds and he probably gets less (late first and a late 2nd?).

Retain nothing and add nothing, and you’re probably looking at a late first in value. I’m not sure the additional late second is worth two thirds and a bunch of retention.

Well a late 2nd is worth about 2 3rds, so no, it isn't providing anything with respect to the retention, in your example

I agree with your point though - it would be very difficult to extract reassonble value for any retention given on a 5-yr deal.

Yeah thinking five years of locking up a retention spot is good business is, well, let’s say not very well thought out. It would need to be for max retention and a wildly dramatic overpay to be close to worth it for a rebuilding organization that should be positioning themselves to be maxing out retention spots on a yearly basis being a TDL asset broker.

Huberdeau -> even with retention, I don't think this contract moves
Coleman -> perhaps?
Andersson -> at $4.55...maybe?

They've got Marky eating a slot for 2 years.
Kadri eating one for 5 years?

Still one there to use on expiring deals or on a massive package.
My bet is Kuzmenko will be dealt at/near the deadline and retention will be part of the deal. That will leave one spot this year and I’d also bet the Flames will want to leave that open for Sharangovich if he doesn’t resign.

They could move off that strategy if someone wants to give them an outstanding offer on, say, Coleman.

You think they're going to retain on Yan Kuznetsov?

That’s what I’m saying. We could retain on Kadri to make the market “larger,” but we’re unlikely to recoup any addition value for that retention.

It’s like dropping the price of a product. Which, increasing the market is great! You sell more! But we have one Kadri, so we’re actually just losing value.

Of course it will...anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. Having said that, if this team comes out on the other end with a legitimate Cup contender, then you are potentially looking at years of above-average attendance, merchandise sales, and overall financial benefit.

At the end of the day, I think most of us know the reality of what's to come...but still prefer it to being stuck in purgatory.

If there's one thing I've learned over the last few seasons, it's to believe the exact opposite of what Nick Kypreos says. He's lost his touch.

The Kadri contract isn't actually bad enough to worry about retention. He was still pretty good last year on a team that wasn't very good around him. If they decide to trade him I doubt retaining comes up unless it's to a cap strapped team

Wasn't attendance already slowly going down after the past couple of seasons? People were losing hope in the team.

At least a rebuild will bring hope. I realize that gate sales are important and the team will take a hit on that during the rebuild process, but it's about planting the seeds for the future and hopefully building a team that will sell out after the new arena opens. Letting the club wallow and slowly bleed out until the new arena opens would be a much crappier business plan IMO.

I wouldn’t retain on Kadri.

Term is an issue and I’m certain a buyout with a year or two left or some LTIR shenanigans were always going to be part of the picture here. If the intent is to move Kadri, which I don’t think it is at this point, I’d bet there will be interest.

Do you think there will be much difference in attendance if that Flames are say Montreal level bad vs Anaheim level bad? Both teams were toast early enough in the season even though Montreal was 20 points better than Anaheim.

You really have to try to be San Jose level bad so they aren't going to be that bad unless they move out every decent guy on the roster.

Watching young guys try and fail sounds better than watching old guys sulk and fail. Just my opinion.

If the team is bad, there has to be some reason for hope.

As mentioned, in the Young Guns era, there was no hope, because the Cdn teams couldn't compete financially.

It is similar with old and bad teams - nothing to be hopeful about. With a young and bad team, at least they're young and there is hope for improvement

Teams (Leafs) using Dreger to try and rattle the Flames cage a bit. His quick disclaimer right after is painfully clear he's dutifully and reluctantly doing some GM's dirty work to cause a bit of a stir and put some pressure on the Flames.

Kadri is happy here, so is his agent, so it's not coming from this side, it's coming for a side that wants him.
That said he never wanted to leave Toronto and that's probably the only team he would go to since he likes it here.
