Watched this one online late last night. I really didn't like their play in this one. Where they were tenacious the last game, they were tepid tonight. Didn't battle hard for pucks, didn't make quick plays, didn't control any of their zones very well, and didn't try anything creative in the offensive zone.
I'm going to chalk it up to being on a back to back on the road with travel against a very rested team, but it was a pretty ugly game overall. Still giving up glorious chances because of poor defensive coverage/awareness. They fixed their neutral zone a little in the 2nd and on, but the 1st was terrible. Markstrom held them in it tonight...again.
Still plenty of things to improve upon, mostly consistency. I'm still reserving judgement until about game 10, but they still have so many Sutter habits offensively that it's driving me crazy. Unlearn those habits and they may be able to score by committee, but I'm just not sure they have the talent to bury it when they create their chances. What sucks is that they players have lost the defensive game that Sutter preached, and they kept his horrible offensive strategy as part of their habits. Lose-lose. It needs to get fixed.
I will say I like Huska as a coach. You an see he makes adjustments in games pretty well and identifies problems right away. I just hope he gets them playing to his system more effectively soon.

It’s equivalent to saying “someone on our team will get them back”. What’s the problem with disliking this? Just because it’s Johnny?
If an oiler said the exact same quote, would you swing in to clarify your interpretation? They don’t play for our team.

Johnny is so meek, it was funny to read him hinting that they'd even the score.
And yes it is cool to hate Johnny. All the kids are doing it.

I hope people can use their own judgement and not be swayed by who said it, regardless of who it is.
He said "it was a little unnecessary" and "someone will try and even it out next game" finished with "I don't know, not my department".
What part is wrong?
If Calgary had a star player and someone hit him like that, I would hope someone would try and "even it out next game".

Nope not at all, i really believed Huberdeau was just plain awful and since I'm feeling so crappy after getting a Flu & Covid booster shot yesterday, I may just watch the game again today to see if I still agree with myself, lol

There is a difference between your feet leaving the ice because of the hit and the hitter launching to make the hit. Rasmus didn’t end up in the air because of the physics of the hit.
I’m ok with playing to the final whistle though and finishing a check. You could argue he thought Laine was going to continue carrying the puck. Of course he sticks out his arm as part of the hit clearly after he knows the puck is gone.
It’s just funny how hockey players seem to have a little less respect for each other than other athletes. The game is out of reach, it would be sweet if no one got injured. This is their livelihood after all.

This x100. It happened accidentally for a shift and they dominated. Huberdeau needs players that drive, get open and have a strong shot, and most importantly players that can anticipate a damn pass.
Mangipane isn't that guy, he's a weak player that doesn't get very open and doesn't anticipate Huberdeau's nifty passes (as many don't). Coronato is the exact type of player that would thrive with Huberdeau, hopefully coaching doesn't get complacent with line combos because the current ones aren't great.

We're not a star laden group, we need to maximize chemistry on lines and we're not doing it right now.

But doesn't chemistry take time to materialize (and then maximize)? I'd like to see them stick with a top line combination, whether it's with Mangiapane on the wing or Coronato, for a good 15 games. They'll have bad games, but let them continue to play together and play through it.

Yes. “Let’s develop chemistry” and “we had a bad game, change it up” isn’t compatible. People may not remember but it took a few games for Gaudreau and Monahan to click.

Meh performance against a less than meh opponent. They need to start shooting from the high danger areas rather than passing out of them to low percentage areas for the shot. Frustrating to watch. Anderson should receive a suspension for his hit. Just bad decision making and put a player at risk for no reason. If it was Huberdeau on the receiving end we'd be asking for a lengthy suspension.

This might be my own confirmation bias but when watching the Flames in the attacking zone, they seem to take longer than other teams to pass and shoot, usually stick handling for a little bit instead of receiving and passing/shooting immediately. I understand they need a lane sometimes and this all might be me seeing things I've decided already, but that's what I've noticed.

They had jump in the first period but after that you could see the heavy legs. Still disappointing to lost another game to the Jackets starting their backup goaltender. They are still finding their way here but at least the goaltending has been better than last season.

It's not just you; I've noticed it too. It's infuriating, isn't it? The game is timed in tenths of a second for a reason, it goes yhat fast. those little pauses give the opposition time to get set, close a gap, get a stick in a lane, etc. that maybe wouldn't ne there with faster playmaking. Especially goalies! 1/10 of a second might only be 2" of lateral movement for the goaltender, but thar cam easily be the difference between a goal and a save.

I think everyone wants Huberdeau to pop and lead the charge ... I get that. So you watch him closely and get frustrated when he turns the puck over or makes a bad play.
But skilled players turn over the puck.
This year (early) Draisaitl is first with 5.75 turnovers/60. The rest of the top five are Matthews, Marner, Eichel and Beniers.
Huberdeau is middle of the pack at 1.88/game.
His five on five metrics are actually great to start the season ... better than his years in Florida for most.
Get the PP going and he's likely a 90 point player this season.
