As opposed to the giant Phoenix Glendale Tempe Mesa market of hockey fans?
At least people in Utah, you know, actually play winter sports.

Property ownership does not equate being informed, especially on this topic. As Strange has pointed out there has been a lot of information one out and all of it has been on the downside of the proposal. The infringement on Sky Harbor was enough to kill the deal let alone the hundreds of millions it would take to remediate the site for the proposed use. Finding a new location for the buried remains of the landfill and the trucking costs would be astronomical and cost prohibitive to some. Tempe would be fronting too much of the cost and eating too large a share. The Coyotes would’ve getting free land, free remediation, and an estimated half a billion dollars in tax breaks for possibly building 2,000 high density living spaces. The campaign was so opaque that the details were embedded in three special election votes all linked together. All failed miserably as more information was made available to the public and more stakeholders explained their concerns and reasons against the proposal. Tempe dodged a bullet.

Sure but that's not really a prerequisite for success. People also play winter sports in Vermont, but they're not putting a team there. Texas, California, and Florida can all support NHL teams. Arizona would be no different if the team made the playoffs consistently.
Mesa is, for all intents and purposes, part of Phoenix. It's far more entrenched in the nucleus of the area than Glendale.

You're right, the Hockey fans in the valley are Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert/Scottsdale
The Tempe land was easily the most valuable which is why they made that choice #1.
Several viable plan B's in the works

Looks like the Coyotes will lose their TV deal going forward, without much in the way of prospects for a new one.
https://www.nexttv.com/news/diamond-...sports-arizona
As Bally's are rejecting these deals, teams are usually finding an alternative way to get their games on TV, but often lose out on that RSN revenue. But with the Coyotes getting less than 10,000 viewers watching their games, is there a point in doing that?
Coyotes only local revenue stream this year may be from whatever they can get out of their tiny arena, and looking at ticketmaster, they are no where near sellouts most nights even though it is only 5000 people.

10,000 viewers... lol Doesn't Edgemont have more people than that?
Mickey Mouse franchise should move to Disneyworld. Orlando Coyotes. Don't sue us Warners!

That's old news. The Coyotes agreed to terminate their deal with Bally because of Bally going bankrupt, not the other way around. Rumour has it the team is going to follow in the Suns' lead and broadcast their games over the air this year.

... bally probably went bankrupt because of Coyotes TV. like 10,000?? are there any tv shows even close to that low? don't most get cancelled if they get 700,000 viewers?

No. Bally is owned by Diamond Sports, which broadcasts like 50 different pro teams in the southern US. It took over all the Fox Sports channels. This is an enormous issue that has affected 13 (?) different NHL teams this summer and is one of the drivers behind the cap not going up this year. The Coyotes' own viewership figures have little to nothing to do with it.

Allegedly it's more entrenched in the nucleus of the area than Glendale, but honestly that's always been a cop out IMO.
They have 10000 people watching on TV...how many fans can there really be in the area in general whether it's Glendale, Tempe, Mesa, etc.
In the end the Coyotes franchise failure has had nothing to do with where the rink was located. The team has been plagued with poor leadership and poor ownership since about the year 2000 and the franchise is poison at this point. I don't see Meruelo being any better with how he's handled both the Glendale and Tempe situations, and now has the team playing in a 4600 seat arena still. Even if they surprise this season with Cooley and others being exciting players, it's going to be tough to grow the fanbase with a 4600 seat arena and no local TV deal.
And my opinion on this remains unchanged - the market would be fine with a competent ownership group given the opportunity to try to re-brand, and re-build the team's image from scratch.
Move the team, work with Ishiba to build a new shared arena with the Suns, and in 5 years or so expand to Arizona/Phoenix again via expansion. That's the only way this is going to have success in Arizona. (Maybe you don't even have to do that...just move them temporarily to Quebec for 2-3 years while an arena is built and maybe it will be a fresh start when they come back)

Not sure where this TV viewership figure is coming from, but it's worth noting the Ducks actually draw lower ratings on Bally than the Coyotes do.
The solution, however, is almost certainly to broadcast their games on public access TV like the Suns are now doing. I think that's going to end up being the plan.

The Phoenix area could and should be a good market, but the brand has been damaged by all the side crap over the years. Bad press after bad press over the years takes its toll.
Maybe a new arena in Mesa can undo years brand killing. They would have been better off just killing the team years ago then using Phoenix as an expansion market right about now. Not only would they not have endured losses, the market where the team would have moved could be building up viewership in a new market and then they could reap those sweet expansion fees.

I'm still waiting on these "multiple letters of intent" they were planning to sign.
Hell I would settle for confirmation that they signed the one they claimed to have signed.

Nope. The Bally cancellation was just the precursor to them completing their new deal, which will see them be broadcast on a much more widely available channel. Bally was only available on special cable packages, whereas ABC15 is available for free over the air. Very similar to what the Suns have done.
Seems to me like a huge win for the visibility of hockey in the market.

Hard to see how they can make much money off of this without the carriage fees.
Have you watched sports on ATSC 1.0 subchannels? It's not even really as good as 1980s SD TV. I suppose it may be better on ATSC 3.0, but who has a tuner for that?
This can't be really spun as a positive for the team and seems unlikely to work out long term.
