That's why he's starting in an advisory role with (what I assume is) very little responsibility, and not the coach or AGM.
Iggy goes along for the ride, gets his feet wet, and Conny will show him the ropes and maybe bounce some ideas off him.
It's newsworthy because it's Iggy, but if it were a former player with less cache, this would barely be discussed.
Yes, it’s newsworthy and could be a good thing for the team depending on responsibilities. My post was in response to saying that Conroy and Iginla had both culled a great deal of off-ice experience since they left the game, which isn’t accurate. Although it has been pointed out that Iginla’s partial ownership of a junior team makes him an executive. Sure, just like owning a Ferrari and some tools makes you an F1 mechanic. Conroy has earned his opportunity. Iggy is just starting his journey IMO.
The argument is going to be Iginla is well connected and could be a valuable asset in making deals happen. So we’re Gretzky and Messier in similar roles for the Oilers. I just want to be consistent in approach here. For years we laughed at the Oilers and their fans for creating the old boys club and vouched we’d never support the same here, yet here we are. Adding Iggy and hoping for the additions of Camalleri and Tanguay in roles. someone even floating Kipper’s name. Seems pretty similar to a developing old boys club, just our own rather than theirs.
I like the addition, because it’s Iginla, but I really hope we stop there. We need fresh ideas, or a trip down 2004 memory lane. Unless someone is very qualified they shouldn’t be hired.

The biggest difference is the astonishing sense of entitlement up North. That's how Kevin Lowe ends up shrieking about "knowing a thing or two about winning," and how Craig MacTavish goes from an MBA programme straight into the GM office.

I might argue the biggest difference is the Oilers legacy hires won multiple cups while the Flames legacy hires *checks notes* got to the finals once.

Given what this team has been through its encouraging, to say the least, to see the franchise make fan friendly moves like this. Regardless of his role. The positivity is needed.

So Iggy dips his toes in hockey management, decides he'd rather help coach kids at the local school, or go back to Massachusetts to become a tv meteorologist.

This is the very embodiment of the point I was making. Well done.

Happy I could help!
I get the specifics aren't the same, just seems a little fitting that you guys have spent years trashing the good ol boys club and then started your own. And if you are going to get the band back together for a reunion tour, it would be nice to actually have some hits to play!
I don't have a dog in the fight and think the Oilers are a crap team. I just find it funny to watch.

Not so worried about Iginla's resume at this point. It's a part-time, work from home position. He'll give it a year and go from there. Low risk.
I recall they hired Lanny McDonald, and while he did corporate schmoozing and box suite sales he harboured a desire to get into hockey ops. Led to some bad blood and it took a while for egos to smooth out.
Don't know if it was Risebrough or Coates at the time that gave him the brush-off.
I think it was later than that, and had to do with ongoing clashes with the infamous Ron Bremner.
IIRC, Lanny was involved pretty substantially in the GM search that saw Craig Button hired. When he stepped down shortly thereafter, a lot of speculation was that Lanny was mad not to have been selected as GM himself, or at least given a plumb role in hockey ops. Lanny denied it, but something had soured him on the organization and he didn't come back until Ken King wooed him shortly after taking over.

Frankly, I doubt Lanny had the acumen or skills to be a hockey ops exec. He was once given some role in Hockey Canada but no one has ever talked about him in those roles since.
I'm going to guess that over 50% of the active posters barely remember Iginla given their age, and that's okay. Just know that today's announcement is an amazing moment for the Flames and the older fanbase like myself and nothing you can say will convince us that this anything but a great move.
He played with Crosby and got the assist on the golden goal. Even if they don't remember him as a flame, they sure as hell were old enough to watch the 2010 Olympics.

Yeah pretty cool sequence in that Crosby immortalized Iginla as the guy who passed it. Without the infamous call, it wouldn’t be as prominent a memory for most Canadian hockey fans.
