Big difference is Conroy putting in the work for many years as an assistant to learn the job before being given the reigns to anything, and could have gotten a GM job anywhere in the league by now. Kevin Lowe started as an assistant coach, and 2 years later was made the GM of the Oilers for some reason
The biggest difference is the astonishing sense of entitlement up North. That's how Kevin Lowe ends up shrieking about "knowing a thing or two about winning," and how Craig MacTavish goes from an MBA programme straight into the GM office.

I love these guys, but also felt a tinge of hypocrisy as we chirped at Oilstains for years about their old boys club in MacTavish and Lowe, etc.
but this would be more like Ryan Smyth and Wayne Gretzky came in to take over.
Every team has former players. Rob Blake/Luc Robitaillie, Mike Grier, Yzerman, Sakic, Shanahan, Ron Francis, etc., etc., etc. They all started somewhere and learned so no problem with Conroy/Iginla.
People only hated the old boys club in Edmonton because they acted like #######s, holding up their rings like they were important to the titles.
