I think this is another area they could address the current issues.
Instead of "here's the light skinned people performance" and "here's the darker skinned people performance", maybe focus on groups/performances that are unified and not segregated?

The best example of this is the Stampede Parade. Celebrate Western culture, yee haw, while other communities also march to show off their culture.
I mean are we going to get to a day where the Stampede Parade is insentitive?

I never liked fireworks growing up.
I'd see these amazing displays on TV, and then here in Canada we'd get the lamest shows ever, in comparison. Especially in the 70's & 80's.
Seemed a big deal about nothing.

If rebranded to Northern North America Day is it okay to have fireworks?

How about Fireworks Day? That's what we used to call May 24 when I was a kid.

If the idea is that we should cancel Canada Day altogether because it's offensive, then let's have that discussion. If the idea is that for one-time-only we cancel fireworks for Canada Day to acknowledge the historic suffering, then let's do that.
I am willing to listen to any proposal, but what I don't want is for every Canada Day in perpetuity to have a black cloud over it. Canada is a great country and we shouldn't be ashamed of it IMO.

Council didn’t make this decision and if we were to reverse it, it would do nothing more than discredit the voices who asked for a different kind of celebration. Reversing this decision would be upholding colonialism and racism

If council didnt make this decision....who the hell did?
The virtue signalling this whole thing is about has hit absurd levels.
If there is/are/were legit reasons for this, they really need to hammer on them, instead this has a lot of people wondering what's going on.

Honestly, a councilor like her is what makes electing progressives so difficult for me. Like I'm 100% in favour of all of the inclusion and equality and such, but then you get things like this which are entirely stupid. Add that to her important initiatives like choosing a city bird, and you just start to question to efficacy of these people.

I mean -- snark aside -- you get what he's saying, right Pepsi? Penner (my ward councilor until I moved early this month) has been a huge letdown on council, and it's dumb sh-t like this that gets worthwhile progressive candidates painted with the same stupid brush that allows right-wingers to tear them down as all the same.
The average voter is not as engaged in their local politics as the posters in this thread are, even, so this stuff does real damage.

We should re brand it as birth control day. Now that is an accomplishment worth celebrating. Everyone can celebrate by finishing inside. Talk about fireworks.

I vaguely recall Russia has a paid holiday for people to go have sex because of their pending population catastrophe.
I would welcome this holiday here.

It just becomes a virtue signaling contest. I truly believe that in today's society, people are more afraid of being labeled a racist than a pedophile.
When people talk to me about anything cultural, they often apologize first.
"I'm sorry to say this but chicken feet is gross".
You don't have to be sorry to think that chicken feet is gross, it's not racist to think so.

Totally. I just found “I struggle to vote for (large, vaguely defined group) because they care about official birds too much” funny.
Penner seems… terrible? But not because she’s progressive, because she’s terrible in general, and terrible by progressive standards.
Voting for a progressive because they’re progressive is the same as voting for a conservative because they’re conservative. You’re going to end up with a lot of crap (and the same goes for not voting for someone based on either of those two features).

Yeah and it might be that she's not a great councilor. And sure, if the only reason people are voting for anyone is because they're "progressive" that's fair. I think that is over simplifying things as well though. People get elected, and start championing these ridiculous causes, and frankly that does reflect on people who are of like mind. Welcome to politics?
And the bird comment was specifically because that could be the only thing contribution shes made in her term at this point?
