Are indigenous people actually asking for this type of stuff? Honest question? Like do they honestly care about fireworks?
This is actually a really good question.
Just speaking from my experience: A lot of corporations have made gestures to the LGBTQ community that, while they may be well intentioned, that nobody in the queer community really asked for but have become cudgels used by hate pandering politicians to beat up the community.
I believe there could have been a way to make reconciliation a centerpiece as part of this event.

Um, they are… But as far as I know, Indigenous people didn’t ask for them to be cancelled.
Some did, but whether that's representative of a more widely held view or just what a few people want isn't totally clear:
Quote:
Nicole Johnston, an Indigenous advocate from the Piikani Nation, said she and others asked Calgary to drop Canada Day celebrations altogether in 2021, following the discovery of children buried in unmarked graves at a Kamloops, B.C. residential school.
She said in 2022 they asked if fireworks could be cancelled out of respect.
“But instead, you know, they went ahead and had them right next to the Children’s Memorial,” said Johnston, speaking of the temporary memorial to children who died in residential schools which now sits on the steps of Calgary’s municipal building.
Johnston said she met with city officials again earlier this year on the matter, and she continues to relay messages to them about what her community would like to see.
“What I’m getting from the people is, I think the mayor should step up and apologize for the first year that she was in office for not understanding . . . what the fireworks meant for Indigenous people,” said Johnston.
And this didn't come out of nowhere. Here's an article about the same thing last year where the city was saying they'd be reviewing the whole thing for 2023:

Yeah, that's pretty tasteless on the city's part to do it right next to the memorial. I can understand why some of them might be pissed.
I've said elsewhere that I can understand why FN might not he super keen on Canada Day celebrations. From their perspective, it could look like a victory lap for genocide and colonialism. You might not agree with that perspective, but it's understandable why someone might feel that way.

As a general observation, what's cringe is how quickly any topic here is dominated by your ilk of posters with the same agenda. There are no discussions being held here anymore; just a few of you stroking each other over your deep intellectualism. So, yes, it is predictable and woke AF. Enjoy. Post Simpson's old man screaming at the clouds gif.
Except that FormerJamesTaylor is the farthest thing from being an intellectual.

Sitting down to make my latest calgarypuck post.

For the record - I disagree with fireworks being cancelled.
But the light show will probably be something like this and be fine. Its ok to have change. Its not like they are going to turning a street light on and off and calling it a night.

Besides infantilizing another user, that’s a pretty poor take of what played out there.

It used to be called Dominion Day which was far worse. Why can't Canada Day symbolize and celebrate being Canadian of all walks of life in the present instead of it being some representation of the past. Call it Canadians Day then

Hopefully the Canmore firework show at millennium park still happens. Fantastic backdrop, and the town really punched above their weight with the fireworks shows they put on. Definitely worth a drive out for a day in the mountains and catch the show before coming back home
