How many GM jobs are there on the NHL? Treliving either hopes to land another gig such as Pittsburgh or do something else. Change is not a bad thing for both the organization and the individual.

But man what a turn of events in one year.

Be an interesting discussion between Brad and Huberdeau.

Lost in all this is whether you liked Trelving or not, nobody can deny that the man busted his hump trying to improve his team. He made a lot of mistakes but it's clear he was never in an optimal situation save for the years between the beginning of his 2nd contract and Edwards hiring Sutter for him where he briefly had some autonomy.

Rhett makes a point on Barn Burner:

"If I'm Craig Conroy, I'm pissed off"

Asks what sort of interview Craig Conroy has to go through to get the job?

Does make me feel like if Connie doesn't get the job, he'll be gone shortly soon.

If Leafs get bounced early in the playoffs, Treliving will land there. I think it was a foregone conclusion for a while, Flames are a farm team for bigger markets now.

Wow! Garbage bag day for Treliving...

I figured the writing was on the wall after the loss to the Oilers last year and the team's stars leaving. It was very clear that last season was the Flames' all-in season to win the cup as the culmination of Treliving's work, and it didn't work out.

LOL Alright!

Time for GM Sutter part 2!! (let's be honest, whoever ends up as GM will just be told by Sutter what to do)

So... Huberdeau to Tor for the current equivalent of Stajan, Hagman, and Meyers! Alright!

Any big 4th line grinders on the Rebels eligible for the draft this year? 16th overall baby!!!!

This is going to be awesome!

It's really not going to be awesome

Never mind just Canadian teams, this may now be the most poorly run organization in the entire league.

I wonder if this mean Conroy is going to get a legit shot at being the GM now, or the Flames are genuine in finding someone else to cover the role?

I wanted change in the front office, so I'm getting my wish. Tre will be alright, and do well elsewher.
I suspect Conroy has the inside track, but they have to do a search to ensure they are not missing out on someone they might have otherwise missed.

It’s a narrow field - the incoming guy has to like the present HC or at least be willing to work with him. I wonder if Lombardi applies.

EDIT: Conroy should not be PO’d about the team wanting to at least do a quick process. They know him, sure. But they owe it to fans and the team to see who the actual candidates might be.

I don't know. That is pretty standard for most senior jobs. Even if they plan on promoting from within, they will take a look at what external candidates there are.

I mean, lets face it, its all depressing.

But I think we all have Sutter blinders on. He's such a presence and the rumors of power struggles are running rampant.

I really liked Treliving and If I had a choice I would have liked to keep him. But when you really look at it, it was time for him to move on. His era was the Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk and Gio era. He did his best to position that core to win. But he floundered too many times with poor goaltending and sub par coaching hires.

The beginning of the end for him was probably Tkachuk and Gaudreau leaving. He threw a hail mary with a great trade and UFA signing to try and keep winning when you have a coach with Sutters' track record. But after probably the most frustrating season in recent memory, it really was time for him to go.

If I were to point to one thing that was Treliving's undoing throughout his tenure. It was Goaltending. Full stop. There were a number of versions of this team over the past 9 years that were absolutely good enough to win a round or 2 that were ultimately undone by bad goaltending.

I don't hate Maloney at all at PoHo. Its boring as hell, but he has a ton of experience and I think ultimately would probably be good at the role.

Its right in the title of the thread, he is the PoHo and "interim GM" he won't be taking both roles. There will absolutely be a search for a new GM. To me the obvious choice is Conroy.

The issue is with Sutter. With a new contract for him just starting, I don't think a firing is what will decide his fate, its the direction of the team. If its rebuild time, he's gone. If its keep trying to win time, he stays.

Color me concerned about the future of our pending UFAs

INteresting times around here.

I fail to see any upside to Conroy being GM.
Sure Conroy was/is a nice guy and a good player, neither of those have anything to do with being a good GM.
If you're in a tough negotiation for a contract or trade he just doesn't seem like the guy

I'd have a lot less issue with this today if it was announced that both Treliving and Sutter were moving on, instead of just Treliving.

The way it stands it really feels like Sutter won the power struggle, which giving him the extension before Treliving never made sense and IMO contributed to the issues this year.

In the end the issue I think that remains is that Edwards does not give his GM autonomy to do their job - and in the end I bet that is the reason Treliving didn't want to re-sign.

Lol at least that will accelerate the bottoming out. All UFs walk and Huberdeau gone. No on will touch his contract though.

At the end of the day, all this noise about Sutter Vs. Treliving doesn't matter to me.

The biggest question is: what in the hell is this team doing? If they're seriously considering running this thing back, !@#$ this team.

I actually think not naming conroy as interim helps shield him in the application process (provided he’s interested). This way he can interview and it doesn’t look like the fix was in for him. Helps outside perception regarding the process, which would help conroy’s credibility going forward as he places calls to other GMs.

Francis on 960 right now. He implied he had a lot to tell us after the season and this would be the time to elaborate further.

The only glimmer of hop is that they want the new GM to pick their coaching staff and will give Sutter first crack at why he should stay. If it a condition of the job then yuck
