Perhaps I'm oversimplifying, but one thing that seems absolutely inevitable is that Huberdeau will sign a big long-term contract sometime between now and next July 3 (ie. within a few days of UFA day).

The only thing he stands to gain by waiting is some more control over location...but he doesn't have to look far to see how that worked out for Gaudreau (or Klingberg/Kadri at this point TBD). Until a few days ago he thought he'd be spending another decade in FLA...I kinda doubt he has a particularly strong opinion on alternative locations, yet.

For the next year he has very little control of where else he goes (8 team no go list). Not signing now means significant risk that he is traded to a contender as a pure rental, which would effectively take an extension off the table until the end of the season. Injury, poor play, or another unforeseen pandemic could cost him millions. See Hall, Taylor.

I'll be pretty shocked if he isn't inked well before training camp. Get the money now, ask for a trade later if necessary...apparently lots of people will even think he's a super awesome dude as long as he asks the 'right way'.

In that case... fold the team, take up darts or collecting decorative plates.

Depends what you mean by Skiing I guess. Quick Google image search for Miami Ski Club reveals that people with enough money to do stuff can have fun on water or snow.

Spoiler!

We will know when contract negotiations are seriously underway when "Huberdeauvertime" enters the forum

They are not allowed to ski during the season. Not sure about water-skiing

Huberdeau’s value is for the most part already defined by Johnny and Tkachuk’s . It is what it is.

It’s harder with Weegar. We are more likely to overpay for him.

Exactly. They will just move on to the narrative he will ask for a trade.

I (on the other hand) have watched the Panthers play a lot and you will soon understand that Huberdeau is on another level that Gaudreau will never reach. He plays a puck possession, cycle game which is how you win in the playoffs. He doesn't get knocked off the puck. He manages a PP wonderfully, he PKs, and he expecially elevates his teammates. Look at what he turned Sam Bennett and Anthony Duclair into. They just had career years with him after not accomplishing much in their careers.

Point being- he can run/anchor his own line. You can give all the other talent to Lindholm - if possible but Huberdeau will be fine playing with Mangiapane and another young center.

Huberdeau-XXXXX-Mangiapane....maybe make Dube the Center or give Monahan a shot if he is healthy.

I think it's pretty obvious that Flames are missing a Top 6 Forward but they should gear it more for Lindholm's line.

Gaudreau was able to carry a line but he struggled against tight checking teams or playoff hockey because he simply was just not big enough. He couldn't "grind it out".

Tkachuk never had the skillset to carry a line.

Huberdeau meanwhile has the ability to carry his own line, elevate his linemates to perform well beyond their capabilities while still "getting his".

The Flames missed sorely a second line in the playoffs that would be able to dominate matchups. With Huberdeau's acquisition, I think they have the opportunity to achieve the depth that they sought.

With Colorado losing a lot of their depth, I believe they have come down to being beatable again.
You’re right, I don’t watch a lot of other teams play. Sometimes I’ll catch the occasional Canadian team but there are too many other things to watch or do in life then to watch the Flames play along with 31 other NHL teams. There’s just not enough time in the day to fit absolutely everything.

As for Huberdeau, I’ll admit, I have extremely exposure to his game. But I was also not enthralled with what I saw. I know you say his cycle game and puck possession game is geared for the playoffs, but his poor playoff performances is probably the main reason Florida felt like they should move on from him. I’m going to take a wait and see approach with Huberdeau. I'm more confident that Weegar will probably be able to replicate the success he had in Florida.

As for Gaudreau and Tkachuk, I thought they both drove their respective lines quite well. They were definitively the best playmakers on the team which probably isn’t ideal as wingers, but that’s more of shot at management for not solving. But when bundled together, that created arguably the best line in the NHL. The concern for me is that Huberdeau won’t have that second guy to be able to play off of allowing the opposition to hone in more on him and shutting him down. So yeah, it’s still imperative in my eyes that Treliving finds that quality RW for his line IMO.
