I clicked on this thread because for reason, my Youtube recommendations are full of videos on the current social issues and closures happening in downtown San Francisco.
I talked to someone on my gaming discord who is a pretty wealthy individual who lives beside that mall that closed and he confirmed that the downtown is getting abandoned and it feels a bit like the white flight that happened to Detroit in the 60s and 70s. Shoplifting in broad daylight is rampant and to that effect, retailers are locking up their product until their leases end, and then they are leaving the area. He also said the city is controlled by 5 old money families and that also contributes to the lack of political will and power to make changes to the system.
This news crew was visiting a drug store and there were four brazen shoplifting attempts during the short time they were there filming the segment:
Hey, "stop being over dramatic! It's not that bad!"
Things are so messed up down there and Vancouver is going down the same path.

Meh...I lock up the ice cream tighter than that in my own house!
Much ado about nothing!
If you havent defeated a hobo in an alley in single-combat can you really say you've earned that ice cream?

More hyperbole drummed up by tourists. Any true local (from Mountain View), will confirm things are just fine, never been better!
Dude, things are SO much worse. What you didn’t see in that video was that each one of those people shoplifting in a Walgreens went on to murder 5 tourists in broad daylight outside the Union Square Apple Store
And were they arrested? No. The cops just sat crying in the corner, wondering what another armageddon night spent sleeping in their Teslas would bring.

Gonna ask one more time since I got 0 responses the first time: Is there anything that can be said in defense of the state of the city? Is there anything that's tracking positively relative to crime and homelessness epidemic?

It’s a cool city, if you don’t fixate on those things.
So the city is doomed, but people should relax because it isn't as bad as it's going to get? Am I interpreting this correctly? Is this the most optimistic way to frame the state of the city?
Things are so messed up down there and Vancouver is going down the same path.
And I doubt Calgary will be all that far behind.
Is there anywhere in North America that is seeing a change in trend in homelessness/addiction/overdose deaths? Overall it just seems like a really bleak situation with no end in sight at this point.
Because we are on a message board in Calgary and can do exactly zero about it? I'm sorry I didn't write a white paper on how to solve their problems.
You feel uncomfortable discussing the matter on a message board because you haven't written a white paper on it? Seeing as this situation or something similar seems to be on the horizon for Calgary and every other major city, there is ample motivation to start educating oneself on the matter.
All I'm looking for is an opinion that lies somewhere between "the city is doomed" and "the city is fine" and so far I'm coming up with nothing.

Well, common sense should be enough to tell you it is neither doomed nor fine. The worst case scenario (which I guess is, vaguely, “doom”) is not going to happen. And there is a problem, which takes “fine” out of the equation.
I don’t think anyone highlighting the problem in even the most extreme cases are describing a doomed future, nor do I think anyone suggesting that the problem is manageable or that you can still live/travel there with little or no impact on your is suggesting everything is fine.
There will be a tipping point at some point, and while it’s surprising it hasn’t happened yet, it will happen, and there will likely be some extreme measures to solve it.

Last time it took ~50 years to undo the damage done by people giving up on city centres. I'd argue they never actually got back anywhere close to where they were previously, in so far as being livable places. How do we fix it faster this time?
I think if the addiction/homelessness trend doesn't reverse, the damage goes way beyond city centres as well.

You issue licenses to the Ultra-Wealthy to hunt the Hobos and Addicts and then funnel the revenue from those licenses into housing and rehabilitation programs!
Theres fewer people on the streets which should help ease the housing crisis, theres fewer vagrants and addicts which should ease the congestion in rehab facilities and you ease the budgetary crisis....on top of all of which, presumably the least fit hobos are probably the ones getting killed so you're improving that demographic too!
This is just wins all around! And if Elon just happens to get caught in the cross-fire? Well...as they say, accidents happen all the time...

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I think the tipping point would be when the majority of downtown leases expire and the majority of business do not renew, which seems to be inevitable at this point as the first few domino blocks have already dropped. It seems like things are due to get dramatically worse within the next 5 years or so unless there is one hell of an intervention. All out class warfare isn't the most probable conclusion, but it's in the mix.

Nah....if there is an immutable law of social dynamics its that 'Rich People Dont Fight.'
They pay poor people to do it for them.

Just scrub San Francisco from Youtube and voila, problem solved.
