BART is probably convenient enough after grabbing bags and exiting the terminal; but Uber is pretty reasonable too, especially if they’re a party of 4. It cost me about $50 from SFO to Santa Clara, which is a bit farther out, albeit opposite direction, than his destination.

For one person that would make sense, but they have four people presumably staying at the same hotel.
BART would be around $40 bucks for four people and then a walk. From SFO, an UberXL would be around $50-$60 straight to the door. From OAK, probably $60-$70.
It still makes sense for 4 people. I’d collectively save the $15 dollars and enjoy the 5-10 minute walk.

Unless they’re hauling giant suitcases, I guess.
If they took the BART they might have to walk through some seedy areas to get to Union Square as it’s right next to the Tenderloin. I wouldn’t do that with suitcases right now. Take the Uber.

I stayed in the Tenderloin in 2003 as part of a layover to Asia post grad. My buddy booked it. It was the craziest 72hrs and also likely most dangerous in my life.
The guy at the front desk when we checked into the YMCA was like WTF you boys doing here!?! From there we were chased by drug attics and thugs, saw some extreme poverty, watched drug deals where the dealer was a senior using a walker. Its a messed place.

With a group of 4 people, I would just take an Uber XL ($40-60) rather than BART + walk with suit cases, especially if you're going up to Nob Hill. Cost is going to be similar, but it'll be much faster taking an Uber than BART + walk.
Heading down to SF next weekend with some friends from the UK. Staying in Nob Hill/Union Square area - what’s the best way to get in from the airport? There will be 4 of us.
Set up a new Uber account and sign up for the Uber one trial. 10% off all rides and upgraded and comfy vehicles.
SFO to Union was between 35-48 USD for UberX with one discount earlier this year. but X and XL weren't too dissimilar prices IIRC but I dunno if it was affected by the one trial. I just kept refreshing and waiting till it was low 40s to below 40 USD. Also depends on the surge pricing. Every 5-15 minutes I would see the price yoyo. So start keeping tabs while waiting for luggage. With Uber one, we often got vans and large SUVs on UberX no problem but we were two people, so we weren't as picky. But most of the airport Uber were large cars. Smaller cars were mostly Lyft and other companies IIRC.
For the price for 4, don't take BART. Just a few bucks more, less walking and way more comfort.
Y’all have the weirdest reasons to avoid the BART. I must accept that I am alone in my love of the BART.
The BART is fine. I think it’s just a matter of convenience. You arrive in a new city, you have either the familiar Uber or an unfamiliar transit system. I’d take the Uber to the hotel and then the BART back to the airport.
I clicked on this thread because for reason, my Youtube recommendations are full of videos on the current social issues and closures happening in downtown San Francisco.
I talked to someone on my gaming discord who is a pretty wealthy individual who lives beside that mall that closed and he confirmed that the downtown is getting abandoned and it feels a bit like the white flight that happened to Detroit in the 60s and 70s. Shoplifting in broad daylight is rampant and to that effect, retailers are locking up their product until their leases end, and then they are leaving the area. He also said the city is controlled by 5 old money families and that also contributes to the lack of political will and power to make changes to the system.
This news crew was visiting a drug store and there were four brazen shoplifting attempts during the short time they were there filming the segment:

In some places I agree, though I think you get a richer experience taking public transit than you do getting carted around in an UBER.
SFO to Union on the BART is dead simple, though, takes the same amount of time (less if traffic is ugly), and is cheaper. If it’s four people and you don’t want to think or walk anywhere, I get just spending the extra money on the UBER (doing it as a single or duo seems kind of absurd though).
Assuming they’re going to want to walk around and explore a bit anyway, why not get familiar right off the bat?
It’s like going from SF to Oakland or back. Yes, you can just UBER. But in that case I’d recommend the Ferry… or the BART.
