Here's my assessment: big, slow, gets outscored.
If the Flames give him a one-year deal and flip him at the TDL — fine. On a long-term contract, this could be a disaster.

It was a forgone conclusion that the Flames would waste this cap space.
The fundamentals behind the team's direction right now are just wrong. Unfortunately we can't expect things to change until the Flames change direction.

Hanifin - Andersson (give them more offensive time)
Zadorov - Tanev (give them the heavy minutes
Valimaki - getsomeoffense
Kylington - Stone (at league min)

Blackhawks turned Artemi Panarin into a Leafs 3rd round pick. Will be interesting if they extract any value from it.

Flames don't have this type of player, and its been a while since we did.

Except Zadorov really hasn't done that consistently. Maybe Sutter can get more out of him.

A-ok with a 3rd

We better hope Anderson and Hanifin take big steps forward offensively (points).

Now without doing a Groupon ticket buy. Seattle is going to be terrible and unless there is a lottery win in their future, will be for years to come.

Can you win scoring no goal?
How many one goal loss did they have last year?

So do the Flames have to at least match that qualifying offer? Another team could still technically sign him right?
His last contract for 1 year was $3.2M so I'm guessing he'll get at least that much again but for 2 years.

You also need to score goals and I don’t know where that comes from on this team. I don’t think Treliving does, either.

I know +/- is not a perfect stat, but this guy has been a + player for the last 4 seasons, notably on a bad Chicago team last season, but on Colorado he was in the + double digits.
Do you have other stats that show him getting outscored?

Very unbalanced.
Hanifin - Tanev
Zad - Anderson
Valimaki - Whoever
Hopefully by the end of the year Valimaki takes the #4 spot.

You said pretty much the exact same thing about Tanev.
Softest D in the league.
It's a question of fit, and need. And the role each player is given.

I'd rather pay a 3rd for Treliving to have an RFA to re-sign because Treliving is awesome at that than pay no assets for Treliving to sign a UFA because Treliving is terrible at that.
