I wish it was a conditional 3rd on signing, with a reduced pick if not signed... but I assume BT was allowed to talk to the player prior to the trade?

Now sign him to a reasonable contract, and I'm totally fine with this. He brings violence and defence. Its important to remember that RFA re-signings are Tre's greatest strength.

I really just don't get this move. Likely doesn't move the needle for CGY at all.

He's got arbitration rights.

He'll be here at least 1 year.

Essentially traded Rittich for Zadorov - excellent!

Now go sign a better backup.

I think they qualified him as the must have known there was some market for him. Plus insurance in case they couldn't sign McCabe.

Excellent defense, ZERO offense.

Think he'll be perfect for Sutter's system.

Between him and Pitlick, the Flames are going for pure defense so far this offseason.

A-ok with a 3rd

Seattle has made a lot of mistakes but will somehow make the Stanley Cup Finals this year

Everyone was saying "we got cap-space when Giordano was taken"

...we are now going to spend I'd say probably 65%-70% of Giordano's vacant cap-space on a defenceman who has bad underlying numbers. "He's big"

I am continually baffled by your assessment of defensemen.

He was qualified, he's playing for Calgary this year.

I'm OK with this deal. Flames definitely need to be tougher to play against and this player will help.

to get the 3rd rounder, Francis would actually have to make a trade. Impossible.

Unless Zadorov signs for less money, this is another stupid deal by Treliving

I think the playoffs this year showed that you need a big, mean blue line to succeed in the playoffs.

I hate bleeding picks, but for an RFA where we can get some term out of a player, it is a good investment. Good job by Treliving here. Now get him inked to four year contract at a reasonable price and we have a winner.

He was available last deadline, no deal done.
