I felt like I worded that poorly lol.. buy in based on two games!..

But they were a damn good two games. And given where they came from just days ago, that's some Midas Touch miracle work from Sutter. Which makes you wonder what he can accomplish with more time with this group.

Interesting.
Actually looking at the stats, Tkachuk is in the middle, and above Lucic and Bennett in ice. So not sure where you're seeing he's at the bottom?

Per natural stat trick

Here is a list of all games the last two seasons where the Flames posted (score-and-venue adjusted)

1) A 5v5 CF% over 60%
2) A 5v5 xGF% over 60%

Geoff Ward (76 Flames games coached)
2020-01-18 - Flames 2, Senators 5
2020-02-23 - Flames 4, Red Wings 2

That is two beatdowns of some last place teams. And we lost one of them actually.

Darryl Sutter (2 Flames games coached)
2021-03-11 - Canadiens 1, Flames 2
2021-03-13 - Canadiens 1, Flames 3

Who cares? Ward is the past.

We got a legit coach finally in Sutter. Think present and the future. This is just step 1 (or 2 including goalie) of work needed to be cup contenders.
Not to mention its two games...Peters had the team 2nd overall and they still mailed in the playoffs

Great start but save the I told you so's for making the playoffs/winning rounds

So, um..., how'd the team do tonight? Pretty damn good, imo, nice to see the 5v5 goals. The urgency and commitment in play completely stands out. Let's hope it keeps going!

(So, maybe take the Sutter talk or "who said what about the coach" to the Sutter post....)

I define a perfect night as:

Calgary = WIN
Edmonton = LOSS
Vancouver = LOSS

Unfortunately, Edmonton is playing Vancouver now, so they can't both lose... but with our 2 wins against Montreal, I'm still pretty happy.

Yeesh, I butchered the spelling of names there. The icetime was overall really balanced.

Edit: Removed stats, those times don't add up.

This is what real coaching does. It takes a roster and makes it better than the sum of it's parts. I strongly feel that the anti-'try an elite coach' brigade was actually posters upset that this roster wasn't giving it it's all under crappy coaches. Almost bitter in wanting them to fail rather than see them succeed under proper guidance.
I'm someone that has said the roster deserves more of the blame and coaches get too much of it.
That doesn't mean I've EVER wanted this roster to fail. In fact I would be happy to be wrong because ultimately what i want is for this team to succeed. That's what I care about. I really don't care how often I'm right or wrong. I'm a fan on a forum with opinions. What I care about is seeing my team win a championship. So I hope I am wrong about the role of coaching because that will mean this team have a sustained turnaround under Sutter. From my point of view that would be wonderful. But I need to see it beyond 2 games. I need to see consistency. I need to see performance in big games. I need to see sustained commitment to doing what's required. I need to see it in the playoffs.

But when we start to make divisive comments like the above that suggest because someone has a different view it could mean they are bitter and 'want the team to fail' I don't see how that leads to good discussion on this board.

And as a reminder, I wanted Ward fired.

Those are way off compared to NHL time on ice.

Are you excluding special teams ice time?

I was looking at naturalstattrick but it must not be correct.

The team has played with a different character for two games. It's only two games, but it's worth feeling good about. It's all out of our hands anyways. Might as well enjoy the renewed sense of hope and optimism that these two games under Sutter has created.

The next 4 games will be big. Two against the Oilers and two against the Leafs. These are games where we will see a better test of how quickly and dramatically their character is adapting under Sutter, and of how big a difference Sutter's in-game coaching and adaptations make when facing adversity.

Great game! I haven't watched many this season, but seeing them play faster, not collapse every time in their zone and actually attack is refreshing.

There haven't been many things to cheer about this year, other than Markstrom, but it's great seeing the team turn it around. Hopefully they can continue it for the rest of the season.

I know it is only two games. And I know this core has been unable to play well for sustained periods of time. This feels, and looks different though. The tenacity, the pace they play with... even watching Monahan carry the puck a few times... it all seems very different from what we've seen before. Obviously we need to keep it up for a sustained period before we make any proclamations... but I gotta say, I don't think I've seen this team play the way they played these last two games, specifically this last game.

When Wards ripped of a 7 game winning streak (I think it was 7) it was great but it seemed more smoke and mirrors. These two games were impressive because the Flames absolutely deserved them, started strong and played complete games. I would say the score flattered the Habs in both outings.

On the other side - man Montreal looks like a mess. Who showed up tonight? Petry, Gallagher, Weber?

Pretenders, like always. 7/7 vs Ottawa does not put them on a different tier, micro/macro, whatever.

Flames just dominated the first, and didn’t let them push back in the second. Missed the third but if the shots were any indication (9-8 Montreal), we did a reasonable job of locking it down. Watching the highlights Markstrom had a huge save there to keep it 3-1.

Oh, and courtesy of Sammy Hudes:
