I swear - the Flames may have won the game but for that penalty. And those seem hard to kill (plus he’s key on the PK). I bet it threw him off after they scored too, because you’d be thinking about that for a while after.

I don't think the team can play afraid to make mistakes. I think they know they are all smart players but sometimes stuff happens. Just recover, defend hard and fast then get going attacking again. Just play their game and have fun. It's fun to compete and it's fun to work your tail off - tremendous satisfaction. They get skating and their skill, vision and quick puck movement come out are fantastic. PLAY FAST. Don't worry, don't panic and don't come apart. Just keep skating and initiating. They are smart they know how they need to defend but importantly how they need to work to get into the zone and flow.

Don't get tunnel vision just get your head up and make the easy play/outlet. Use the middle, use the weak side just play connected make those passes on the tape.

Skate and finish checks. Forecheck like you're possessed. Be creative in the offensive zone get them (including their goalie) moving around. GET SHOTS.

No Hyman, Simmonds, or Muzzin - if ever there was a time to play hard hitting, in your face, clogging hockey, this is it.

Take your liberties, boys, no one's there to really push back.

Odd. Big Snag Zag gets activated.

One of Markstrom or Rittich hurt? Treliving working a deal to move Dave?

Hmmmmmm...

Could just be about Zag a day of NHL pay...but yeah that would seem a bit odd given the cap situation.

*Edit nvm, Marky out

The thinking is that they need Lindholm at centre because they don’t have one elite centre. Lindholm on the top line is like when McDavid and Draisaitl play together - you needn’t worry about scoring from any other line and it’s way easier to match against, especially when the Flames are on the road. No one is scared of Backlund’s line - they can get the odd goal but you aren’t game planning for them, especially when Backlund is going to be busy matching against Matthews. Lindholm centring a line means you can match against both Matthews and Tavares with a centre who is good at D.

I don’t argue it’s not a possible option. I argue against the “no brainer” or “irrational” descriptions because there’s a perfectly rational reason to do it.
I guess my problem with never trying it is the offensive numbers compared to previous years 5 on 5

2021
Gaudreau - 0.55 PPG
Monahan - 0.5 PPG
Lindholm - 0.44 PPG
Tkachuk - 0.28 PPG
Backlund - 0.35 PPG

2020
Gaudreau - 0.57 PPG
Monahan - 0.46 PPG
Lindholm - 0.55
Tkachuk - 0.61 PPG
Backlund - 0.46 PPG

2019
Gaudreau - 0.88 PPG
Monahan - 0.76
Tkachuk - 0.66
Lindholm - 0.59
Backlund - 0.56

At least last year you had two consistent 5 on 5 scoring lines and even more so the year before, this year it is just Johnny and Monahan. Much easier to defend against. If Lindholm has to be a center move him to the third line and reunite Backlund and Tkachuk.

I revise my earlier score prediction from 8-2 loss to 12-1 loss. Matthews sets a new single-game point record.

I still believe.

But if this team gets blown out tonight, with all of the players that the Leafs will be missing from their lineup, that may begin to change...
