In case you wanted to hear what the TSN guys had to say about the pick on NBCSN:

some of the highlights:
McKenzie says that of all the first time draft eligibles in the CHL, Kayliev was 1st with 102 pts and Pelletier was 2nd with 89 points
when asked if Pelletier could be more of a center because he is listed as a winger/center. C. Button says Pelletier is absolutely a LW and not a center
C. Button: If he as a little faster exact comparable would be Jaden Schwartz

You have to give the Canucks fan a little leeway, they don't quite understand that when you make it to the cup finals your team can win. Something that they just aren't familiar with. Probably why the statement on winning a cup is confusing him.

I like drafting players whose best traits are elite compete level and work ethic.

Would have preferred:

Brink
Dorofeyev

Would feel are roughly comparable:

Lavoie
Afanaseyev
Suzuki
Leason
Matt Robertson

In my mind, a trade down to 31 or the early 2nd would have been a good maximization of assets, but the opportunity might not have been there. I can see why teams passed on Brink/Dorofeyev with the NCAA and Russian factors respectively. No risk like that with Pelletier.

I was hoping to get someone probably a little more talented in carrying a puck in transition and in the offensive zone through traffic, and with some better bull-to-the-net abilities, like Bennett tries to do (although he’s held back by his puck skills). Judging by the highlight pack on page 1, I don’t see Pelletier doing a whole lot of that. But he gets to the right positions, sees open guys and gets the puck to them that most don’t see, and has some decent hands. At 26 you’re never getting the complete package, so now we hope for good development and future top 6er a couple years from now.

reading up a bit more on this kid, I do think there's a lot of positives. Hope we got a good one.
This is why i like the pick so much. The kid has to have great qualities if they are stacking the LW AND our mngt team is truly going BPA.

That's a good point: position be damned, he's their BPA.

I did hear Francis on the radio yesterday being Francis and suggesting that he doesn't expect Johnny to finish his contract here.

I listened to part of the 960 preshow this morning. The last part of it Francis predicted the flames would pick an undersized defenseman....I am not sure he has ever had the lead story on any flames player related news...if he was strictly throwing crap at the wall he should have a better batting average just by volume...

^^ When Francis leads with "People are saying..." it usually coincides with something on here.

I knew nothing about Pelletier so just watching game videos some things that stood out:

-he skates like Bennett but with a better center of gravity
-unfortunately he also seems to have hands like Bennett
-fortunately he competes like Bennett
-his shot could use some work
-he obviously needs to bulk up and get stronger, hopefully he has another growth spurt coming too
-I saw reports that he has a great 200ft game but based on what I saw he looked lost in his own zone
-if he's going to make it in the NHL it will have to be as a middle 6 winger who can play in all situations because I don't think he has the raw skill to be a top line scorer or playmaker
-he looks to be fairly versatile as Moncton used him at LW, RW and as the QB from the point on the PP
-as others have mentioned he looks like a Gallagher/Bennett hybrid which would be great but he also has the skill set to be a great defensive forward if he can get bigger and improve his defensive game

Seems like a decent pick at 26.

You can't get a perfect player at 26th. Seems like a good pick to me.

No CHL draft eligible player who was selected last night recorded more points than Pelletier (89) this past season. Not one.

He puts up points in bunches, and he is efficient in doing so. Especially at even-strength, where he averaged more points per 60 than Kirby Dach, Peyton Krebs, Arthur Kaliyev, Ryan Suzuki, and Connor McMichael, among others.

Pelletier is a pass-first, two-way center with an elite hockey IQ and understanding of the game around him. He has above average speed and admirable agility with the puck.

Jakob Pelletier can often out think his opponents

Future Potential:
Jakob Pelletier projects to be a top-six center at the NHL level. He is a smart player with strong skating abilities and a responsible two-way game that his coaches have trust in at all levels. Pelletier plays a comparable style to that of Travis Konecny of the Philadelphia Flyers. Heading into the ’18-19 season, Pelletier forecasts as a first round pick for the 2019 NHL Draft, likely in the 20-30th overall range.

Alright so here's the feedback from three of the top QMJHL media guys in the Maritimes:

Contact #1: Says he's an outstanding person and player. I like that they lead with person first. That's a really good sign, long-term you need someone with the right personality and that fits the right culture. According to this contact he is one of the most complete players he's seen since covering the Q (I'm ballparking 10+ years of coverage). Continued to say that his compete level and character level is elite (his character is something that will keep coming up with others).

Contact #2: Says that Pelletier could handle the puck better than most 18/19 year olds in the Q. He's got a great shot but they're more impressed with his passing, he can always seem to find sticks and make the pass. Don't let his size fool you, he plays bigger than his size. He may never throw a big hit, but he's responsible in his own end and creates turnovers. Compared Pelletier to Marchand without him being a jerk. Said that these characteristics were why he was drafted and (at the time of the text message) Lavoie was not.

Contact #3: Points out that Pelleiter is small but a very complete player. He has a superb attitude, works his ass off, and has the ability to use his lack of size to his advantage.

Each of those guys has forgotten more about the QMJHL than I'll ever know. I trust them implicitly and would take a bullet for 2 (don't know the 3rd *that* well, haha).

He is the kind of player every team needs. Pelletier is ready to do anything to win and has that rare quality of being able to rise to the occasion and come through in crucial moments.

He can throw big hits, win board battle and protect his puck like everyone else. He is showcasing a great upside and work ethic every game that makes me believe he has a good chance of becoming a good top-six player. Contrary to other undersized forwards, Pelletier still possesses a high likelihood of getting to the NHL as he got a complete game and can play in all situations.

Please let this kid be the Flames version of Pasternak or Konecny.

Late 1st round steal.
