My favourite thing about this game was how the Flames played in the last half of the third period despite being up 2-1. In days of yore they might have tried to clog things up and play it safe. Instead, they seemed almost ticked off it wasn't 5-1 and kept playing to score. So much better to watch and way less nerve wracking.

Also, I'd take Mrazek as a backup. He seems lucky.

I love Backs so much. 4 points in these last two games going into the All-Star break.

Monahan gave Gio his shoe as knee pad, I just love how tight this team is.

5 on 5 was less flattering to the Flames.

Hurricanes had been playing well and I’m not surprised they gave Flames all they could handle. Flames have better finish though and they won the goalie battle. And when game was on the line, Flames were excellent even though they lost the 3rd period.
Was Ray Charles counting their chances tonight...29 lol

Best game of the season for Neal by far, hopefully he can start turning things around.

according to the boxscore, Carolina had 35 shots total and scored on 2...

soooo... 29 of those 33 shots were 'scoring chances'?

I think this win was pure luck. I was at the game and, honestly, it was pretty boring for the most part, if not disappointing. Our boys did wake up late in the third but they need to be better than that now. We didn't even have time to get too excited in the OT; happened so darn fast...

Poor Neal though! Whatever he's being punished for by the hockey Gods this season, he better pray for forgiveness really hard. His face at the bench after stumbling and missing that empty net said it all; oh my, I felt so sorry for him!..

Also, not sure if it made it to the broadcast, early in the game, Giordano and Ferland bumped into each other and exchanged some pleasantries. I was surprised to see that (reminded me of Iginla and Giordano a bit). Almost immediately after that, the announcer welcomed Ferland and Hamilton back at the Dome and Ferland waived at the crowd, nothing more after that, of course.

Well, take the win and enjoy the break.

9-1-1 in January. It's no emergency, the Flames are burning up the NHL.

Oh, that guy. I still think she says Wayne. But that debate is over, I guess.

Carolina seemed more energized to start the game, but I don't think that they out-played Calgary, possession metrics aside. This is where I see a disconnect from advanced metrics and the eye test.

Carolina's system is eerily similar to that of Gulutzan's, and is exactly what I dreaded when Peters was hired on. Instead, Peters has this team playing creative possession hockey. If you are not talented enough, possession hockey just hides some warts. They looked good, and they can point at a stats sheet and say: "We are good, but unlucky". Hogwash. Play Carolina again 10x with the same underlying analytics, and I bet that Calgary wins another 7-10 of them.

Calgary seemed like the more dangerous team out there most of the night. Misfired on some 'sure goals', as well as Mrazek bailing his team out. Which goalie worked harder this game? Which goalie lost?

Hartley's Flames, Gulutzan's Flames and Peters'/Brind'Amour's system - the exception to the rules when it comes to advanced metrics. It is teams like this that make 'noise' (IMO) when trying to prove a team's play is sustainable or unsustainably lucky.

Carolina deserved to win that game only due to effort, not execution. Flames were the much more dangerous team all night.

Too bad the scoring streaks ended for Gaudreau and Giordano (what a save by Mrazek there, though Giordano should have elevated that puck). Time to start a fresh one with Washington!

Hope Ferland is ok - hopefully he heals up and stays healthy from now until the end of the season/playoffs on new team, or he isn't going to cash-in on a long-term deal.

Happy that the Flames didn't boo Hamilton, and gave him and Ferland an applause during the TV timeout.

Flames are still on a roll! This team just wins.

Haha stupid Oilers. Rebuild with all these high picks and a generational player thrown in, and Calgary still blows by you. Calgary makes rebuilding look easy. Actually, most teams do that. Oilers are just some sort of special alright.

Such a great time to be a fan. Absolutely nothing to complain about. This team is such a blast to watch.

A little tip of the hat to Carolina. Small sample size I know, but I think that Dougie is likely their third best defenceman. Slavin was the best player on the ice tonight IMO, Faulk was very tough to play against as well. Dougie had a good game too. I guess the moral of the story is that they have a very good D- corps
