My favourite thing about this game was how the Flames played in the last half of the third period despite being up 2-1. In days of yore they might have tried to clog things up and play it safe. Instead, they seemed almost ticked off it wasn't 5-1 and kept playing to score. So much better to watch and way less nerve wracking.
Also, I'd take Mrazek as a backup. He seems lucky.
In all situations, Hurricanes had 29 scoring chances and 11 high danger chances. At least 2 posts I can think of.
Flames had 20 scoring chances and 10 high danger chances.
5 on 5 was less flattering to the Flames.
Hurricanes had been playing well and I’m not surprised they gave Flames all they could handle. Flames have better finish though and they won the goalie battle. And when game was on the line, Flames were excellent even though they lost the 3rd period.
Was Ray Charles counting their chances tonight...29 lol

I think this win was pure luck. I was at the game and, honestly, it was pretty boring for the most part, if not disappointing. Our boys did wake up late in the third but they need to be better than that now. We didn't even have time to get too excited in the OT; happened so darn fast...
Poor Neal though! Whatever he's being punished for by the hockey Gods this season, he better pray for forgiveness really hard. His face at the bench after stumbling and missing that empty net said it all; oh my, I felt so sorry for him!..
Also, not sure if it made it to the broadcast, early in the game, Giordano and Ferland bumped into each other and exchanged some pleasantries. I was surprised to see that (reminded me of Iginla and Giordano a bit). Almost immediately after that, the announcer welcomed Ferland and Hamilton back at the Dome and Ferland waived at the crowd, nothing more after that, of course.
Well, take the win and enjoy the break.

We play Bill Peto's new team tonight in Canadia. Lindy and Hanifin will surely score while Ferland and Hamilton literally get killed. Oh forgot Derek Ryan hat trick guaranteed. This will lead to the main board being inundated with post from flames fans about how they won the trade because lets face it they are obsessed with determining a winner amirite? Anyway below will have some stupid game info.
Quote:
Please absolutely dismantle Bill "The Idiot" Peters and company. Hopefully he issues a moronic coaches challenge for old times sake.
Quote:
Doesn’t look like such an idiot now that he’s been given a decent NHL line up to work with. Every coach we’ve had in the past 10 years besides muller, who really was kind of an idiot, has gone on to great success coaching other franchises. The thing that’s held us back every year is the inability to ice any real dangerous players or have any kind of depth. Our rosters have just been crap every year. That said, the addition of nino makes our top 9 look a whole lot better. Another center and maybe one more top 9 winger and it starts to look really good. Let’s hope Waddell and co can pull that move off sooner rather than later
Quote:
You’ll really hate him if we lose tonight
I’m sure, deep down, he’s looking to rub our noses in it like we pooped on the rug. The Canes can’t let that happen.
Quote:
He left for a reason and that was only ONE of them. His choice. Pretty good opportunity in Calgary. Loves that western Canada/US thing.
Hate to say it but I enjoyed watching Hanifin skate in the first. He is so smooth…
Quote:
I don’t know many canes fans that dislike you guys, nothing but respect from me personally. Your having an awesome year. Just wish lindholm could have had his breakout year earlier haha. Hope this is a good game. However I do hope we beat you guys tonight.

I swear to god if Peters makes a coaches challenge and wins I'm going to commit homicide.
We are gonna get burned... Never play with the flames of a fallen season

All sorts of nope with this one: late night, former players and coach, needing points...

Rittich is on my fantasy team, so I've got that going for me at least.

Depends on which Canes show up to play; the ones who spanked the Oilers 7-4 or the ones who almost got shut out at home by Ottawa. I have no idea what to expect, which is half the fun of being a Canes fan!

Good luck tonight fellow Ferdaddy siblings. Been cheering for y'all (mainly Zebulon) since the trade but maybe you can be gentle and just have Ferdaddy appreciation night and let him get teh W

Just watched that video of Ferland vs the Canucks in 2015. That crowd was bumping!

Total humiliation tonight. Lindholm will score 5 goals, Hanifin will score 3, and Ryan will score 2. 10-1 Flames.
Hamilton with the lone Canes tally.

Time for the Calgorlina Hurriflames to become one...
I’m happy for Lindholm

Peters true to form…plays Ryan on the PP !

Might be the first time a Peters team wins one with less shots. And it'll be against the Canes.
Bet he wins a challenge too.

I have a lot of respect for our defensemen for blocking as many shots as they do. I can only imagine how much the puck hurts when it hits you and to be committed for 82 games to do that is amazing.

I'd gladly trade half those shots for a goal.
And the other half for another goal.
And then the leftover shot for a third goal.

If Canes lose this game and hold the Flames to under 15 shots I'm going to cry.

1. Draft Mcdavid

Carolina seemed more energized to start the game, but I don't think that they out-played Calgary, possession metrics aside. This is where I see a disconnect from advanced metrics and the eye test.
Carolina's system is eerily similar to that of Gulutzan's, and is exactly what I dreaded when Peters was hired on. Instead, Peters has this team playing creative possession hockey. If you are not talented enough, possession hockey just hides some warts. They looked good, and they can point at a stats sheet and say: "We are good, but unlucky". Hogwash. Play Carolina again 10x with the same underlying analytics, and I bet that Calgary wins another 7-10 of them.
Calgary seemed like the more dangerous team out there most of the night. Misfired on some 'sure goals', as well as Mrazek bailing his team out. Which goalie worked harder this game? Which goalie lost?
Hartley's Flames, Gulutzan's Flames and Peters'/Brind'Amour's system - the exception to the rules when it comes to advanced metrics. It is teams like this that make 'noise' (IMO) when trying to prove a team's play is sustainable or unsustainably lucky.
Carolina deserved to win that game only due to effort, not execution. Flames were the much more dangerous team all night.
Too bad the scoring streaks ended for Gaudreau and Giordano (what a save by Mrazek there, though Giordano should have elevated that puck). Time to start a fresh one with Washington!
Hope Ferland is ok - hopefully he heals up and stays healthy from now until the end of the season/playoffs on new team, or he isn't going to cash-in on a long-term deal.
Happy that the Flames didn't boo Hamilton, and gave him and Ferland an applause during the TV timeout.
Flames are still on a roll! This team just wins.
Haha stupid Oilers. Rebuild with all these high picks and a generational player thrown in, and Calgary still blows by you. Calgary makes rebuilding look easy. Actually, most teams do that. Oilers are just some sort of special alright.

Two jobs for AC. Reg cheering harder than anyone in the Dome, Rittich racing up the ice like a madman and then delivering a huge fistpump midstride as he celebrated.
Came here with intention of suggesting that someone make that a gif. Was beaten to it. Reg was lit!!!
Such a great time to be a fan. Absolutely nothing to complain about. This team is such a blast to watch.
A little tip of the hat to Carolina. Small sample size I know, but I think that Dougie is likely their third best defenceman. Slavin was the best player on the ice tonight IMO, Faulk was very tough to play against as well. Dougie had a good game too. I guess the moral of the story is that they have a very good D- corps
