Look what Scort Darling got with Carolina. The guy was the back up for Chicago and got $16.6M x 4 years. This is very much in line with what starting goaltenders get.
You and I have already had a similar conversation in the Rittich thread and it’ll probably end up the same way. This is what I figured Koskinen would get and he got it. I have a number in my mind on what Rittich might get and we’ll just have to see what happens.

You might be the only person on the planet (excluding Koskinen's agent) that thinks that's an at all appropriate number. Just look a few posts up for a comparable.
Rittich isn't getting anything near $4.5M - never mind the $6M you think he should get.

That Scott Darling deal really turned out great for Carolina...

Turek won the Jennings behind St Louis which was a team that could make the most mediocre of starters look like Roy.
The Jennings is a team trophy and a team with a 2000s Chris Pronger and Al MacInnis will always look good defensively.

Realistically, who were the Oilers going to play in goal? This is likely their best option. As sad as that is...

Chiarelli is obviously being paid by every other Pacific division team, there can be no other explanation for this.

I never said he’d get $6M. At the time, Rittich had one of the best sv% in the league and was trending similarly to Connor Hellebuyck who actually did get $6M+. Did you or anyone else anticipate him getting that? Definitely not.
For me, the fear of him going on a potentially long Stanley Cup run and getting
Vezina votes to add to his leverage was what I was getting at. I was actually hoping that he’d actually sign a deal mid-way into the season at $2.5M-$3.33M.
Lastly, I get that it’s Peter Chiarelli making the deal so it’s easy to laugh and poke fun. But this kind of deal isn’t actually out of the norm. I mean the Flames did something similar 5-6 years ago with Karri Ramo. We gave him a prove me deal for something like $3M, then we bumped him up to about $4M after he proved he belonged.
Teams all over the NHL sign goaltenders to comparable deals. Think Martin Jones, Peter Mrazek, Jonathan Bernier, Anti Niemi and etc. This kind of contract isn’t out of the norm. If your scouts think a guy can be a starter, you hedge your bets and you pay them. Whether it works out or not for the Oilers remains to be seen.

Anybody like the movie “A Mighty Wind”...?Well, I do. One of my all time favourites.
There’s a scene where, at the reunion concert, The Folksmen are preparing to go on stage after The (New!) Mainstreet Singers, but hear the Singers performing the exact song The Folksmen were going to do.
Naturally, The Folksmen are pissed. Much like the management team overseeing the suckage to the north, Harry Shearer’s character suggests a “bold” move in a desperate situation: to play the song anyhow.
This clip reminds me of all the moves Chia does because, even though his plans may initially sound “so crazy that they just might work”, upon immediate reflection, anyone in their right mind should have the exact response that Michael McKean’s character has in the scene.
Here’s the scene for anyone interested. But instead picture Shearer as Chia and McKean/Christopher Guest as some combination of Lowe/MacT/BobbyNick/Katz, all saying “Bold move, Chia! Let’s roll with it!”

Goaltenders are voodoo. There are a lot of swings and a lot of misses. Their performances in the aftermath doesn’t really matter in Koskinen’s case. If these goaltenders have the leverage to get these deals, then they’re all going to take them.
Darling has been really bad. But, Martin Jones has worked out decently for San Jose. Our version of Koskinen in Karri Ramo was pretty serviceable here. Helped the team to the second round of the post season. This is not that bad of a deal like so many are making it out to be.
Koskinen has actually been a bright spot for the Oilers this season. He really just ends up replacing Cam Talbot’s contract who clearly will not be coming back.

Last 17 games (out of 27 total)... his sv% around .900 and GAA over 3.00
Seems like the right time to re-up at 3 x 4.5. Here come the Oilers
