Ohh awesome happy thought on the Fan.
That this deal was agreed to by the person/people that are going to replace Chia, which means that the rot is deep.

Likely needed someone above him to sign off on it. And the people above him are even worse hockey execs than he is

Wow, $4.5M. That’s actually exactly what I thought he’d get on the open market. I made a spreadsheet of the Oiler’s cap situation next season and had him re-signing for $4.5M and a buyout of the Sekeras contract at $1.83M over 4 years.

I love how in the replies, people guessed that Koskinen would get 3x3 or 3x3.5 because Chia is terrible ... but nope, he's actually worse than people feared lol.

Koskinen was never getting anything close to this on the open market. The only team paying that contract is the Edmonton Oilers.
They pay because they are no good.

Boy that comparison is damning. How can Chia defend this signing when it is that black and white. DeSmith may be slightly underpaid but dear lord. Did Chia thing anyone was going to come along and offer Koskinen anywhere near what Chia is paying him?
Unreal.

So basically it works out to +$1M for having to live and play in Edmonton, and +$1M for Chiarelli's anti-Treliving wizardry.

That contract means they're expecting him to play 60 + games next year. Something that he's never done.

Why couldn’t he have gotten that in the open market? He’s already making $2.5M on a prove me deal. He has proven he’s far better than his $4+ million teammate in Cam Talbot. He’s having a better season than fellow UFAs in Bobrovsky and Varlamov who are already making far more than $4.5M.
Look what Scort Darling got with Carolina. The guy was the back up for Chicago and got $16.6M x 4 years. This is very much in line with what starting goaltenders get.
You and I have already had a similar conversation in the Rittich thread and it’ll probably end up the same way. This is what I figured Koskinen would get and he got it. I have a number in my mind on what Rittich might get and we’ll just have to see what happens.
