I honestly don't care about Nurse at all beyond the fact that I hope he ruins their cap situation even more.

They're really going to pay Nurse more to try to justify he's better aren't they

I'd mock Matheson on Twitter but was he the guy with the defense force of Edmonton writers at the ready?

Well lets hope Chiapet is of the same mindset as those other mouthbreathers up north, and signs Nurse to a $6M+ per year deal. What a steal of a player!

Reading oiler fan boy responses to this deal and how it compares to nurse are so pleasing. On hand, they either admit hanifan equal or better to nurse and that this is the upper bound to a nurse extension. Or they, in oiler fashion, push the narrative that nurse is better which ultimately, prices nurse out if Edmonton's ability to get him in under the cap, hahaha.
Love it

It's less than I thought it would be but at the same time I think it's still more than it should be. Would have loved to get the 7th year at that price.
But if Hanifin becomes as good as he thinks he can be, then this will be the 2nd best contract on the team by year 2.

We have one thread where we rip on the worse hockey team and by far the worse city. The constant arrogance that comes out of that dump makes it so easy to keep piling on.

I think Nurse is better than Hanifin
"Both shoot left."
and so comparable
"Hanifin 32 pts last year, Nurse 26."
but Hanifin is a bit better, so he should get less
No wonder that poor Edmonton fan was confused, I don't even know what Matheson thinks of him.

Well if he has a great season and we want him back as the starter, it won't be at $2.5 to $3 million. That would make him the lowest paid starter in the league I would imagine.
If he doesn't play great, I don't see him back here. Can't see him being the backup either.
So yeah, I can see Smith having to accept less money next year but I'm not sure how that would work out with the Flames.

You can take the sweatpants off the Oiler fan but you can't take the sweatpants out of the Oiler fan. The typical Edmonton fan just can't get it through their heads and this post further reinforces it. Nobody goes out of their way to talk about the Oilers except for Oiler fans. E=NG is simply a product of every Oiler fans own demise and self destruction. It's entirely self sufficient at this point.
Also, everyone get's it. You won some cups before the internet, mobile phones and HD television was a thing. It's been nearly 30 years since any kind of success. Your team stinks. Not even a generational talent is pulling your feet from the bottom of the port o potty and it's not going to change anytime soon. At least the Flames make an honest go of things while occasionally being bad enough to go full Oiler and actually cash in a high draft pick.

Looking forward to next year the Flames are projected to have $14,117,457in cap space to split between Bennett,Tkachuk, Kulak and a Goalie. Not to mention find replacements for Lazar and Hathaway ( unless something good happens).

Hanifin isn't Roman Josi, but he is a player who could grow into that type of role. I think it's a pretty good bet for the Flames to make.
I haven't run every contract and crunched every number, but it would seem that the needle on young defenceman definitely moved upwards this summer in terms of AAV contracts. So to get one with a lot of upside at this price point could really be a good move. That said, for a guy like Hamilton who is as proven as he is, these last 3 years of his contract really could bring good value for Carolina too.
Overall though I always thought this trade got the Flames a bit more time with their core. So now you have Lindholm and Hanifin for 6 more years for 9.8 AAV, to go with the other signed pieces like Monahan, Gaudreau, Giordano.
Realistically I think the Flames do need to get a really good team in place if they want another contract from Gaudreau. They basically have 3 seasons to get these results until the questions will pop up on his contract and can you keep him or do you have to trade him now for value. They are now in a position where I think they can focus entirely on getting this done. Whereas they were only 2 years away from having to make a decision on Hamilton. So to me that extra year is huge.
Let's hope Hanifin can become a Roman Josi type value contract, and that the Flames become a top end team expecting deep playoff runs every year.
